Default HOOD - is all hope lost?

I've got an LQ9 I am prepping for my '87 Grand National. It will be carbed with the Edelbrock 7118 dual plane and MSD setup. I've got a nice, stock style hood. Will it have to be cut up/ cut through to make room for the carb and air cleaner???? I can do filtered cold air from the front of the car but will still need something small at the throat of the carb.

I just got the engine, and I'm still in the motor mounts phase. It looks like the truck accessores (and alt) will fit under the hood, but no A/C.

Many carburetor people seem to have taller, cowl induction type hoods on their cars.

Any insight/info would be greatly appreciated (yes, I've searched this site).

IDK what the height difference is, but the Vic Jr on my 86 TA with a drop base barely clears the 2 inch cowl, but i think you would have better luck as my hood slopes down pretty good.

I am curious to see the hood clearance on my A-body swap too. I am hoping to not have to "go cowl", but we shall see.

Default Hood

The performer RPM would be slightly taller than the Vic JR, right?

Speedtigger- I'm following your build. I'm in Volusia, you're in Brevard?

I think the RPM is shorter but I am not sure of that. I am on the on the other coast in the Bay area.

I had a couple GNs back in the day. Here is the last one I had at the track circa early 90s:

I had a victor jr in my 85 trans am with a stock hood. Drop down base, Mr, gasket 2 inch filter and this wierd top that cleared the choke. Barley fit, but it did.

12.4 at 118? That is smokin. I thought I recognized the background in your pic.

I hope this LQ9 runs quicker than a turbo V6.

Hay Pajamasam - that TA didn't have an LS engine did it?

12.4 @ 108 actually. It later ran much faster with a 4.1 forged motor.
I am curious to see what the car runs too. I hope to start on the swap end of next week.

if hood clearance is that big an issue, I'd be doing a LS6 intake and keeping efi, if you can't run a cowl hood. I'm not sure you'll be able to clear all that under a stock GN hood as the cutout for where an air filter would go just isn't that large.

Alright, after looking at my TA again, i think it might clear, i di have room with my small 2 inch area cowl and with a drop base ad as mentioned, a 2 inch filter, i think you might be able to squeeze it in htere.

Default 2" filter with drop base

Be carefull on the lid being too close to the choke horn. I have seen large increases in power on our dyno by milling the choke horn off or using a main body without one. The A/F gets really screwed up if the lid is too close to the bowl vents as well. Make sure the vents are cut on an angle. The motor will siphon fuel up out of the vents if the lid is too close. Also with the lid close to the choke horn this can cause a big airflow restriction.
We had a big block chev on the dyno with brodix heads, solid roller. Made 450 at the wheels. Was running 12.2 A/F. I told the customer I needed to take some fuel out. He was not in favor as a "Pro" built his carb. I took off the K&N 14x4 air filter. Car picked up 18hp at the wheels. I then put the base on by itself. This added another 17 hp. WOW 35 hp in two pulls, no money spent. The A/F came around to 12.8. This engine needed more . I pulled out 3 jet #'s in the rear and pulled 2* timing and the final # was 505. Only parts he bought was two jets. One hour on the dyno @$150.

Was more in it but diminishing returns as the tune was getting close and the customer was very happy.

This is an extreme budget build. I am going with the truck oil pan, so the lower I go with the engine the lower the pan goes.......

Here is pic (don't make fun of my homemade hoist plate).

I don't know about G bodies, but on A bodies the truck pan doubles as a skid plate.

That truck pan is going to hang too low, you should have it and the p/u tube cut 2" and then you'll be good to go.
