Default What is the real cost & performance gain of stroking an ls-1?

I'v been looking online @ stroker kits for my ls-1 & I see Callies has a complete rotating assy for $2400.00, & if I understand it right you can go 383 or 402 cubic inch, but I'm not sure what I'm getting myself into by ordering a kit like that? Does the block require machining? Will it have to be balanced? will it be strong? Will it work with my heads, cam etc... And after all is said and done, is it the best way to spend money to achieve performance? If anyone has any experience w/ strokers, I'd appreciate some advice.

The block will have to be machined. If not clearenced, it will still need a bore/hone. It will have to be balanced unless the company you buy it all from does it in house before you get it all. It will be stronger that stock if you dont cheap out. Stock heads will choke it down without porting. A stock cam will under cam your motor and cause it to be a turd. Build the bottem end, Add some good ported heads a custom spec'd cam and have a screamer.

The engine already has TEA 5.3 stage 2.5 heads and the cam is 230/230 dur 612/591 lift w/ a 111 +2 lsa. One of the reasons I was thinking about the stroker kit is that the motor has a stock bottom end & I'm turning it to 6600 rpm every time I drive it, so I think it could use some bottom end work anyway.... I just don't want to get into one of those $2500.00 dollar projects that actually costs $5000.00!!

If thats the only reason i wouldnt worry about, you can blow it up and just put another $1ooo engine in it and go. whats in it now ls1, 6.0? Just depends on how much money you want to spend.

No, it's 5.7 out of an 02 Firebird. It's making pretty good power, but more would be nicer....lol I got an e-mail today, and they're telling me the 4" or the 4.125" stroke bolts right in with no machine work. The price of either kit is just under $2400.00 balanced, with new bearings, rings etc... I think the 4.125" kit brings it to 402 ci. Do you think there are any draw backs to having that long of a stroke? Will it rev as quickly?

You can not make a aluminum LS1 block a 402 unless you have it resleeved, and that is a lot of $$$. The 6.0L iron blocks that came in 2500 trucks and escalades can be bored without having to be resleeved. I think the biggest you can go on a LS1 block is 383, not 100% sure on that exact cubic inch number.
