Default Ls1 or lq4

I have an lq4 in a 93 mustang. Stock bottom end with 243 heads un
ported a234-246 601-606 on 109 cam victor Jr and a 850 Holley.car went 11.03 at 123.2. Now I just got a2004 ls1 and was going to put my heads cam and intake on it. Will the less weight and more compression make up for the less cubic inches or will it be slower.

no replacement for displacement you can always sell the ls1 for good money the get some flat top pistons bump up the compression then get some more heads from gmpp l98s will cost around a grand..

Hard to say. The larger bore is suppose to help "unshroud the valves", whatever that means. I think it means improve breathing. So with the same induction parts and I assume exhaust it ought to be an interesting test.

You need to drop a lot of weight to make up for any loss in HP. Turning corners is another matter.

thats why you go with the lq9 piston and heads get the bump in compression and come down on the cam lobe height and duration. the other way to go is stroke it. 4.125 crank with matching connecting rods and piston a trip to your local machine shop should be relatively cheap since the engine is running now.. the sale of the ls1 will again pay for your now much stronger 427 small block.

I have more power with my lq4 then I did with the same heads and cam ls1. Stick with the lq4.

Sell, the unported 243s, sell the ls1 and get a set of cnc ported 243s milled. For even higher compression.
With the improved flow, and higher compression it will wake up the motor even more.
No need to swap pistons, just have heads milled. Alredy have cathedral port intake. So no need to go with rectangle port heads

There you go, the ls1 is great but the 4 inch bore has more possibilities for cheaper. Ls2 pistons or some forged units can be had with valve reliefs to allow for larger cam profiles ect ect.

Is the ls1 a poor choice for carb setup? I thought the weight saving would offset the ci.

Lq4 is only better then an ls1 when you bump the compression . Ls1 is still a great choice but it's hard to beat cubic inches .

Lq4 with the lower compression still makes more power from my experiences.

the guy said 450 to the wheels before he pulled it out. Seems optimistic.

Depends on the dyno, climate, ect. But a bit over 400 is common, but there are those like Pat G that have made 450 with everything put together correct and matched to it maximum potential.
