Default msd to computer cord

My computer doesn't have the same port as the cord that came with the 6010. What is everyone using? Will one that goes from the box to a usb work?

Yeah the adapter works fine. Thats what i use on my 6012. New laptops usually dont have serial ports. I have no idea why they still sell the boxes with serial cables.

I paid $7 for one off Amazon. Radio shack wants something like $30 for the same thing.

Good to hear that the MSD software supports the adaptors. My Tunercat and datamaster OBD1 software, (yeah, I know, im going back a ways, lol) only supports a few adaptors. Again, good to hear that it sounds like most adaptors are working. Eric L

so I got a adapter that connects the serial port to the usb on my computer but when I plug it in nothing happens and I cant transfer to the box. What am I doing wrong? Does the box have to have the ignition on or will the computer power it?

I got the adapter from best buy, had software that makes the lap top read the data.

Yeah, box needs to be powered on. IIRC it was a little tricky to get the adapter to work right the first time out. Had to select the right "comm" port. Once that is set up right you just step through the different comm port options on the MSD software until it works.

My laptop will only accept the serial adaptor if I plug the adaptor into the USB port BEFORE I turn the computer on. Then it's good to go

MSD recommends a certain adapter. If you use that one and have the key on, it will connect.

As 3Pedals said above, plug it into computer and MSD, start car, and then turn on computer, should connect (8.1 here )
