Default 5.3 backfiring out of carb

My 02 5.3 is backfiring out of the carb, im sure its a timing issue. I can rev it kinda slow but if i stab it, it either backfires or has a "deadspot". I have the msd 6014 box hooked up to my laptop but not 100% on how to actually mess with the timing.

Stock bottom end 5.3
Rattler cam
Holley carb intake
Holley dp 750
Msd 6014
Any ideas/advise would be awesome

If you didn't hook up the MAP sensor than zero it out in the software.

Beside that tune your carb then come back to the timing.

When you open the MSD software program on your laptop, there should be a box that is labeled "MAP ADVANCE CURVE". Check to make sure that the plot line is "flatlined" at "0" all the way across the bottom.

You want your line to down at the bottom, where I drew the red line for reference. Remember, after you make any changes, you MUST upload it to the MSD box.

I have the 6010. I did not realize they changed the layout for the laptop software on the 6014. Hopefully someone that is familiar with the 6014 will chime in.

Do like LQ4BU said and set it to zero advance for any MAP reading.

Or just hook up the map sensor, vacuum advance is not a bad thing to have.

If this is the first time firing it up after the build. You may have one of the coil harnesses that plug directly into the coils flipped over backwards. But still zero your map. If not and it just started doing it, then disregard.

Found this screentshot of the 6014 software online. It shows the advance curve screen but I cant find one that shows the MAP screen.

As far as I can tell, it looks like the only way to customize your MAP settings is to customize your ignition curve as well. You have to click on the CUSTOM 1 tab, then click on the MAP tab. Are you able to post a screen shot of what the MAP screen looks like? Or even take a picture of your laptop screen and upload that so we can see it.

From what I can see, it looks like you need to drag the dots on that blue line to zero in the middle of the chart. You want it to be just a straight line all the way across from the left side of the chart to the right.

Anyone else correct me if I'm wrong since I do not have the new 6014 in my car.

I also have the 6014 box on a 5.3L carbed conversion. I want to use my nitrous setup that worked with my older small block (with a different controller) but haven't been able to set up a custom tune. Gets frustrating.........
Is anyone running a 100-150 shot without pulling any timing. I know it sounds sketchy but I'm at the point that I'm willing to take a small/moderate risk.......
I do run pump gas, typically Shell 93 octane with Race Gas additive. Engine is mostly stock with cathedral port heads and Comp ****** Thumper mid-lift cam.

Had a similar problem with mine ended up being fouled plugs.
