Boy theres alot of bad info on this thread ALL Z28 in 67,8,9 had 302 engines that was the heart of the option. they were built to compete in the trans am series and had alot of special items in them - the 67-8 had 2 bolt main small journal forged cranks the 69s got the 4bolt mains- new for 69.there were alot of items that were options along with that 4 wheel discs in 69 a crossram 2x4 intake that I think was available in 68(not 100% on that) optional offroad cam the factory racing was pretty heavy back then and all the competitors were doing all kinds of stuff to make sure they would win.
"If your not cheating-your not winning" was the norm, Chevy had Smokey Yunick working on a canted valve 302 and shortly before he passed had an auction of some of this stuff - they called them Hemi-head and a few were put together and in cars although chevy dropped it as he couldnt get any more power out of them.
I have owned a real 69Z since 78 one a Fathom Green and the one I own now is Daytona yellow plus convert 69 and a 69 pace car. now he is claiming he has a 302 - its possible, but you have to verify that block is stamped propely and that it has the 302 3" stroke crank and pink floated rods the 202/160 heads factory aluminum intake. and secondly none of the 302s or 350lt1s had angle plug heads factory that was a over the counter "race part" until the vette alum heads in 86
If you infact find out you have a complete motor out of a Z28 id say hold on to it, it will only go up in value. consider it like a 401k they made 602 Zs in 67 like 7,199 in 68 and 20,302 in 69 if my memory serves me correctly and it was a mass produced motor and wasnt rare but now 40+years later they are rare and desired, good luck with your find.

Well I guess I have to agree with you guys, 67STRIPES and zman1969. You guys just burst my bubble! I did a bit more research and the heads I have with cast 3991492 apparenly were not "smog" leagal and hence could not be installed from the factory. They were "off road use only". So I guess these heads I have been holding onto for all these years cause I thought they were off a 70 LT 1 350 were not so rare. You guys are worse than my wife who tells me all the time my crap isn't worth anything. Nice discussion though, I do hate to admit I am wrong though!!

I agree with zman1969 above on most all. The crossram setup was a over the counter part as well as the angle plug heads. NO Z came from the factory with either. The 3970010 casting listed above was used from 1969 all the way thru the 80's. Came in 2 and 4-bolt versions. What will tell the tale is if it has any stampings on the machined surface of the block just in front of the passenger side cyclinder head, same surface the actual head sits on(well actually head gasket then head)if the alternator is on this side then it will be right behind it. There may be paint on this surface and may need to be removed to read the numbers--Caution--- In case you do have a real DZ 302 you wont want to remove the paint with a scraper or screwdriver, you will gouge the numbers and hurt the value of the motor. Use laquer thinner or liquid paint remover of some kind. If the block has been decked/milled in the past then you may not have any numbers here. If the numbers are gone then so is the real value. I have a 69 daytona yellow Z (hence the username) and have owned aprox 35 first gen camaros. Hope this helps. Happpy to help further if I can!!

Use acetone to remove the paint on the front P/S pad on the block just forward of the head. If the numbers are gone you may be able to lift them using an acid etch. Swab the area with a diluted mixture of water and Muriatic acid, let the solution sit, if the numbers are still there you may be able to see them.

The early 302's were MO blocks. The 69 was a DZ block. My 69 had 186 casting heads, (2.02-1.60) straight plugs, 11-1 forged pistons, Pink rods, and forged steel crank. Its value is what ever some one will pay. Get all your numbers, measurements, etc and put your line in the water. See if you get a few bites. Good Luck!
