Swap the motor. TBI sucks. Tell him to drop in an LS1 or a ZZ4.

the L98 was a good motor, but the 305 TBI was as weak as it gets. 170 bhp stock... that's like, 140-150 RWHP. Yuck.

I loved my '86 TA. It was my first car...

305, auto, t-tops, ect. I paid $3,000 for it with only 60,000 on the odometer. It was mint until I ripped the front end off a car and spiralled (sp?) out of control into a ditch, through a barbed wire fence, and into a tree.

Ahhhh...to be 16 again.

...oh, that was at 100mph too. I didn't have my license too much longer after that.

edit: it just dawned on me that my old '86 TA may not have been a tbi motor. Anyone know if it was? I never knew **** about the motor.

1985 was the last year for carb. motors in the f-body's, some 85's like my z were still 4-barrel carbs. After that it would have been either TBI or TPI. TPI 305's with the 5-speed were rated at 225 in the later production years. TBI motors sucked. F-body.org website link below

"The original 215hp 305 TPI motor came out in 1985 available both
in the Z28 and IROC-Z. The motor was detuned for 1986 losing 25hp
due to a cam change. Torque was increased though, from 275 to
285. Automatic transmissions were required on all 1985/1986 TPI
powered cars."

1985 vs. 1986 305 TPI cams:

1985 305 TPI ---------- 1986 305 TPI
215 hp / 275 lbft ---------- 190 hp / 285 lbft
Tach: yellow 5000 ---------- Tach: yellow 4500
red 5500 ---------- red 5000

Lift: intake .404 ---------- .350
exhaust .415 ---------- .385

Duration: intake 320 ---------- 307
(crank) exhaust 320 ---------- 311
