Default 2000 SS vs 1999 z28

its been a while since I've owned a lsx car. but I got a 2000 SS Camaro a couple days ago. been fixing some problems it had, mostly misses from broken spark plugs (guy tried to monkey them in I guess, cracked at least one of them)

anyways, my dad bought one about a month ago, its a 99 z28...

his has 173k and mine 83k

the z28 has a lid, a straight through cherry bomb type muffler
ss has SLP center exit exhaust

the z28 is MUCH snappier, has a lot more low / mid range... the only thing I can think of that would make the z28 that much more responsive is a good tune. its a dramatic difference...

I've had pcm4less tunes on LT motors and they were great... do you guys think a tune would make that dramatic of a difference? maybe there is still some bugs I need to work out with the ss?

the ss and z28 seem to have roughly the same top end performance (high rpm)

as far as I can tell.

it just has the option SLP center exhaust exhaust.

the z28 is basically stock as far as I can tell to. except the lid and exhaust.

I wonder if someone put a 01+ intake manifold on the z28? I don't know how to tell the different between them I wonder if it would make that much different low/mid range

There should be a group of numbers on the side of the intake. When you find them Google them and you should know. So the z28 has a aftermarket tune?

....

I don't know. I was asking if a tune would make such a dramatic different in the responsiveness and low/mid range

I was also wondering the SS is missing the ground effects, the exhaust looks pretty bad without the piece around it on the rear bumper. is there a place I could buy just that piece?

I tried googling and ebay and couldn't find it

An LS6 intake alone won't make much difference on an otherwise stock car (or with no more bolt-ons than a lid/catback). However, if they did an intake + tune in addition to the lid and exhaust, that would make a noticeable difference.

Are both cars of the same trans type? If they are autos, perhaps the Z28 has a higher stall of some sort? This would make a huge difference in the low and mid-range, since you'd slip right into the powerband anytime you went WOT. If they are both M6s or even autos, perhaps the Z28 had a gear swap? That would make it feel stronger in the low and mid-range as well.

It's also possible that the SS is having other issues that are holding it back, maybe marginal O2 sensors and a dirty MAF are causing poor A/F ratio in the mid-range area, etc.

thanks for the intelligent response.

they are both t56, I think the SS has lower gears, but not 100% sure. off the top of my head the z28 might cruise 200-300 rpm lower in 6th at 60mph. but not 100% sure. they really are pretty close.

i'm going to work through some things today after i'm done with work. clean maf, check o2s with scanner etc...

I don't want to sound rude or condescending here but how can you and your dad not know exactly what's done to your cars? I'm just curious...

I get that, but didn't the previous owners know what was done to these cars?

The bottom of the intakes are different. You should be able to tell by looking at it. Not only that the ls1 intake has a hole on the top of it right after the TB

Gotcha! If I remember right all 6 - speed cars came with a 3.42 gear. Unless someone swapped it they should both be the same in that regard

for your dads 99 , check and make sure hes done the egr mod , right after throttle body on the front of the intake 2 bolts hold a egr obstruction that can be cut. install university has photos. i think a good tune could make a big diff if your was stock.
