The thing is this isn't the 60's or early 70's. There aren't dozens of V8 powered, rwd cars in the GM lineup - nor any manufacturers lineup. Times change. It's a fact of life.
Oh, and 10 years ago there was a SS-badged Chevrolet. The S10 SS was available in 95.

well the thing is with SVT and SRT, those have been around for 12 years (SVT) and 10 years (SRT), not real sure how long Dodge has had srt, unless you include R/T. But what i think this thread was getting at is the history behind the SS line. goes all the way back to 67' or so. thats a long time, and when it was first used it was on all the american muscle, not on a pinto with 100hp! they are all defined differently. Special Vehicales Team just makes a better car from the base model, so it is "Special". dont know what the hell SRT stands for, but as far as Super Sport goes, if i look at a car and it does not look SUPERSPORT to me than it should not have the badge!

Impala SS if you forgot. That was actually quite worthy of the name. Also I do believe the SS Camaro was out. I remember a LT1 SS, but can't remember if it was 1996 or 1997 when it started.

I agree that the name is being ruined. I think it started with the SSr particularly. 
I can't stand the truck/car and I also think the Cobalt, Malibu and Trailblazer fall into the same unworthy category. Like mentioned above by others...the term means Super Sport and when I think of that, I relate it to Sports Cars. And a Cobalt is a compact commuter car, Malibu a family sedan and Trailblazer a soccer mom SUV...no matter the HP ratings. I am a fan of trucks in general, so I'm biased in liking the Silverado SS (not it's name though). Along with the other cars, I think GM has done a good job with the SS models, but they should be named something besides SS. It just seems to add to the uniqueness and specialty of owning an SS.

I could care less how fast the Trailblazer is... it could have a 454 and I still don't think it would be deserving of the SS badge... it is an SUV PEOPLE. I can't wait to see the Explorer Cobra or the Explorer GT ;-)
