Default 1986-1989 Iroc

Are these pretty quick cars? I've talked it over with my parents and they said that an LS1 will be too expensive and too fast for my first car so I talked them into an older Iroc. Just wondering if these are pretty decent cars. Also, are they pretty easy to mod under CA emissions to get a little more bang for the buck.

Last question, I have the chance to buy a 1987 white iroc in very good condition. Only 90k miles on it and runs strong. Deal or No Deal? Lol.

Depends on the motor. Does it have the 5.0L 305 or the 5.7L 350? The 5.0L 305 is slower then a V6 4th gen camaro while the 5.7L 350 is one step below the LT1.

i use to have an 89 RS with the 305. i now have a 00' Z28, but i still miss my third gen camaro (82-92). a third gen camaro is a awsome camaro to start out with, expeacely an IROC. they come with the L98 5.7 V8. or the 5.0 V8, which i cant remember the RPO code on, but anyway. they are really easy to find and buy parts for. its a tpi engine, that is still based on the gen. 1 chevy small block, which makes it fairly easy to work on. the horse power rating, depending on the engine, is from i think 215 for the 5.0, and 235 for the 5.7. with a few bucks invested in the motor, and the right tuning, you can get those motors up to 300 horsepower. i say go for it. i for one love the third gen camaros, and still wish i had my old one (even though i wouldnt give up the one i have now). if you want to know more about specs, and really good place to read at is www.thirdgen.org they have just about anything you want to know about the third gen camaro.

depending on what 305 it is...my 305 stock ran 15.1...that was in 84...i have seen 305 cars run low low 14s and high 13s with suspension and good tires and a decent exhaust

A '89 350 IROC would be the one to get . The braking system is the better PBR system over the earlier models ( '88 -down) and was one of the last years you could buy the 350 with t-tops in the thirdgen. The main problem with the TPI motor is the intake is rather restrictive , get an aftermarket setup and some longtube headers and you'll get a lot more out of it. Cam /heads are a good idea too.

I say get a 90 IROC-Z or a 91-92 Z28. They're bad *** cars. You could put some Long Tube headers and full exhaust even in California.

I believe LU5 or LU9 was the RPO on the 305s. I may be thinking of the cross-fire injection models though.

hey man, great car to start with, i had an 86 IROC, had a 305 in it and it wasent the quickest thing in the world, had like 190 hp stock but with a little work or if u get the 350 than u will be set. i always got more looks in the 86 than i get now in my 02! Candy Apple Red is the best color for an IROC IMO!!!

Since you aren't able to modify it much, I'd go with a 91/92 Z28. Be careful on buying the IROC as if it's not a 350, you might get stuck with a pos 305 that's either the Carb'd pos (LG4) or Throttle body injected (L03) 170hp dog (like in the RS). The earlier ones (85) you could get teh L69 190hp 305, but those have Quadra-junk on them and they are also few and far between. The cross fire was never available in an IROC.

I wouldn't bother with a 305 TPI unless you got it with a 5 speed. You could not get the 5 speed/TPI (LB9) combo until 87. You also couldn't get the 350 (L98) until 87 as well, and remember that was only available with an auto.

Again, I think you'd be best to go with a 91/92 Z28 either L98 or LB9/5speed. Those years had the most power and were most well optioned. 91/92 Z28's with the L98 came with the G92 performance package standard as well. This included better gears (3.23's as opposed to 2.73), dual cats, rear disc, etc. This was optional on 305/5speeds and the IROCs (except 90 when it was just like the 91/92 cars - but 90's are few and far between).

I could go on and on and on about these cars, so if you have any questions, just ask!

One more thing... many filthbags will try and tell you it's a 350 car when it's not. The VIN will be an 8 for L98 and F for LB9.

Well, I'm not sure the chicks are going to be too into the IROC's unless you're cruising a trailer park, but a bright red '90 IROC vert would be my pick

I have no doubt that in a rather short amount of time, a clean 3rd gen is going to be a bit more respected. I have always loved IROC's and I miss mine a lot.

My buddy has an '89 IROC vert, deep blue with a black top. That thing, although slow (305) is the sexiest looking 3rd gen I've ever seen. Even with the top up it looks mean, but with the top down . Now if I could convice him to thrown an ls1 in it.....
