My son totaled his 2000 Z28
Has anyone bought their totaled car back from the insurance company? If so, how much?
This car just got a brand new A4 tranny installed at the chevy dealership 2 days before he wrecked it. $3500.00 worth of new transmission (warranty paid though, thank God!)
The passenger side and the front end are smashed, but the engine was still running.
I'm thinking we should buy it back for spare parts for my WS6.
Thank You,
Cindy

It's only worth it if there are parts to sell. If you buy back the car for 6-7k and only sell 3-4k of parts, your obviously not making any money off of it. If you do buy it back, make sure you can sell the stuff, if that's the route you choose. It would really suck to buy it back and then have the car sit there.

the interior is black and the engine has 65,000 on it and is actually faster than my WS6 (the only difeerence I know of is his has the SLP lid, mine doesn't....yet)
As far as parts go, on the body the passenger side and the front and hood are gone. The rest is fine. T-tops are fine.
All interior is fine, except of course for those blasted air bags (they would have fixed it if wasn't for those).
Apparently we can buy it for what the salvage yard would give them. They'll let me know soon.
My interest in buying it lies mostly in having parts for my T/A. The tranny for sure will be saved for that, unless we decide to just fix the car ourselves and not replace the airbags.
I'll let you all know what happens.

I bought this totaled car from an Ins. co. back in 2001. It was a 01 with about 11k miles on it and was 8 months old. The pass side damage is all there was. I paid 3700 for it and easily sold 10K worth of parts. I sold just the engine and transmission for more than I paid for the whole car.

ICRAZY, funny you should mention building a race car out of it, that is what my son would like to do. Of course, he doesnt have the money to do it.

i bought my red Z-28 back and sold parts and used ALOT of parts for the SS and traded for parts i bet if i had to pay for all the stuff i got i would have paid well over $5000 and i bought the car back for $1775 not a mistake at all for my pocket book plus i learned alot about how those things are put together i would buy it back. some things must die in order for others to live.

Hobbs- yes, "a just in case thing". His transmission is brand new, maybe 40 miles on it.
Anyway, to update you all...
Insurance is paying 14,300 after my deductable. He owes 13,000 on the car and the insurance company is selling him the car for 950.00 plus tax and fees, so we'll come out even.
We are going to have the frame checked and if its ok, he plans to fix the car. So, instead of selling parts, he will be looking to buy parts.
