Default My slow and steady lt1 to lq4 swap

Ever since I sold my last formula I wanted another f body, found this one local. Got it for a GREAT price but it wasn't perfect. Everything on this car worked great. Aftermarket alarm heat ac. You name it, it worked....but that's not what I wanted in my car lol. Goal is to be a weekend warrior and see the track a few times a month. I would like to finish it up before September for a big show in Springfield IL. Not so sure ill make it with this being a budget swap.

Car:
95 lt1 a4
Smoothed engine bay
Hide wires

Motor:
Lq4 stock short block
Katech rod bolts
799 heads
Undecided on cam right now
Stock ported tb
Ls6 intake
Ford 42# inj

Trans:
T56 rebuild
Spec stage 2 clutch
Pro 5.0 (or similar)

And finally pics!
When I first bought the car

Found a local deal on the hood

Gutting heat and ac. Thoroughly cleaning the inside and removing the aftermarket alarm wiring mess

Painting the hood

All the suspension upgrades

Out with the old

Painted the engine bay

Where I'm at now

Still need to collect a bunch of parts and fox a ton of stuff but its getting there. The engine bay isn't perfect but I drove the car Tuesday and tursday morning we had the motor pulled engine bay welded up primed and painted and the car on the trailer. It's not a show car after all!

More to come!

Before the tear down

Low mileage lq4. Was a 100% complete motor.

Lol, that would have been the first thing to come off for me too. I do like the SS spoiler too.

If you have any questions about your harness just pm me or post it up.

Time to remove stuff from the body harness I'm not going to use.

What's this connector? I need to get a replacment but forgot what it plugs into.

The engine harness. Have to re work this before I do the body harness so I don't mess with any circuits that power this harness.

Really nice paint job. That's the one thing I wish I could tackle. I'd keep the spoiler before doing a Z28 but would do the SS. ESP since you got the hood. Who's control arms ?

Umi front control arms! They are a nice piece along with their torque arm.

The engine bay isn't perfect by any means it was a last minute choice to paint the engine bay before moving the car. But for a quick job I'm very happy with it.

Can't stand wiring lol. Removed all the unneeded stuff! There was some damaged stuff in the process that u still need to fix. I was going to relocate the fusible links inside the car to make them easier to hide. Is there any problems with doing that (Just lengthening the wires)? Or also was thinking about replacing them into a fuse block but after reading sounds like I better leave the fusible link.

There was also some damage I need to fix under the fuse box and I think I'm going to relocate all the grounds to one spot while I'm there. That way I don't have to drill any more holes in the engine bay.

Let me get your thoughts!!!

The fusible links are strategically placed. I would not move them, in the even of some sort of failure it would change the dynamics of your circuit protection.

The blue connector is your ignition switch connector I believe, that is a common occurrence with that connector.

Are you going to try and make your lt1 harness work with the Lq? It will work, will just be a TON of work.

The k member in the car now is from a 99 ls1 car.
But ya I was going to go with a tubular one from umi but decided to save the money and go stock instead....at least for now

That's it! It's one of the two connectors for the ignition switch!!

I'm going to either modify a stock f body ls1 harness to plug into the lt1 body harness of have some one else do it lol.
Sounds like I better leave the fusible links alone. Ill have to figure out a way to mount them secure under the wheel well with out putting holes in to the engine bay...

You can modify it, there are several things that need to be changed. If you happen to damage the firewall grommet and want I new one I have the f body specific firewall grommet.

If you choose to have someone else do it, let me know I can take care of it for you.

FWIW, You can sell the LT1 harness and the LSX harness(or save from buying one) and just simply put the money for a new harness, we build brand new plug and play factory style harnesses for your exact swap. Firewall grommet and all. However, they do run $700 but that may save you a lot of time and effort.....

Some pics of a very similar harness in this thread

https://ls1tech.com/forums/lt1-lt4-m...onversion.html

If you decide to do your own we are here to help too. As much detail as you are putting into the car a new harness would be a good finishing touch...

Ill be watching for another update, this is going to be a super nice ride!

one probelm maybe someone could answer is about steering.

I installed the ls1 rack/steering shaft. I turned the rack by hand full side to side and divided it in half and put it in the car. The steering shaft lined up with the column (the bolt is straight up). The rack/shaft/tie rods are used and came off a running car. The steering shaft has not be removed from the rack side of the ujoint.

When I put it all together the passenger side wheel was making a right turn. I thought I had something messed up so I put the driver side together to check and its straight!!

So I had about 1-1/2" threads on both tie rods. I adjusted the driver tie rod but there isnt enough threads to straighten out the pass. side wheel.

Not sure what to do here....

Post a pic if you don't mind about the threads on the Tie Rod..are the lower A-Arms in the stock location?

That blue Connector is the IGN Switch, mine did the same thing in my 95 Z28.

As far as the wiring goes..I do all my own and it's not too bad.

Here's some good info here..

https://ls1tech.com/forums/conversio...on-sticky.html

I would've upgraded to the 98-02 Front Brakes tho..big difference.
