Default Has anyone tested their cooling fan relays?

Got my fan relays wired up buit not sure what the PCM settings are. IS there a way to test with out running the engine. I tried to test today with a hot bath but didn't get any power to the relays from the PCM. Would like to check without trying to over heat the engine. I have a digital dash with temp feed from the other head, so I should be able to monitor temps accurately.

what kind of temps should I start to get worried when running the engine if I need to go that route?

Geeeeeez Duane, what am I going to do with you!

PCM signal should be a ground...If the relays are correct, ground the PCM input pin(Pin the PCM signal is routed to) on the relay, and the fans should kick on. IF they dont come on, you have a wiring issue.

Stock fans should come on around 205 ish......220 temps are not at all uncommon. If it gets in to the 235 range, I would start to worry.

I have my fan on the Chevy II set at 190, or under 30 mph. She holds 190 on hot days here is Texas with no issues, and that is a single 16" fan with the summit radiator.

Well that helps, I just figured the PCM would send 12v to the relay.

Jack, come finish my car for me, will ya?

Ground the pcm lead and they should kick on, if your worried about them not working at first mount a manual toggle as a backup...

On first start up you can run a hose over the outside of the radiator. No way you should overheat like that.

Well thats alright, the nova will be waiting for a little longer. I'm trying to get it to start, drive and steer before January. I'm heading over to Italy for 2 years come Feb so the restoration will not be complete anytime soon.

She's done ran already, just wanted to see if the fans run via PCM control but not sure what temps to worry about on an aluminum block engine.

Thats a shame Duane, but the Cali gig was too good to last. Just give me a shout if you need anything else.

With no radiator then why worry about fan relays?

Unless it is a hot day and you want a breeze with your celebratory beer.

The best way to test the fan relays and wiring is with a scan tool (I used HPTuners VCM Scanner) that can turn on and off the PCM fan outputs by clicking a button.

I don't know what PCM and tune you are running, but my stock 99 LS1 tune would turn the low speed fans on at 226F and the high speed fans on at 234F. High speed cut back off at 227F, and low speed cut back off at 219F. LS engine are designed to run hot (keeps the oil cleaner and makes the engine last longer).
