4l60/65/70 vs 6l80 (the 90 is little longer than 80)

The 6L80 is slightly shorter than the 4L60E. If you follow along on our swap project into the 2001 truck:

https://ls1tech.com/forums/conversio...l80e-swap.html

you'll see we had to use a longer driveshaft with the 6L80.

As you can see in the pics above posted by Bo185 the 6L transmissions have more girth to them (they don't taper down as quickly) so there's a good chance some tunnel mods may need to be made. In our truck project we didn't need to modify the tunnel at all.

John, I have also wondered about the 2wd vs 4wd trans. Is there a short output (4x4) like the 4l60/80 and a longer one for 2wd?

Is there a transfer case adapter or do the transfer case bolt right to the trans?? (what it looks like)

Also don't both 6l80/90 have 32 spline out puts as well?

Thinking of adding one to my 4x4 and was wondering on out put and which trans to get (4x4 or 4x2)

Thanks!

That's a hefty hunk of transmission. I bet that thing is comparatively rather heavy.

Transmission weight:258mm converter: Wet: 94-96kg ( 207-211lb )
Transmission weight:300mm converter: Wet: 102-104kg ( 225-229lb )

6l90 weight
Transmission weight: w/ 300mm converter
Wet: 109kg ( 240lb ) estimated

4l60 weight
wet: 74 - 88.5 kg (163.2 - 195.0 lb)

Speartech,

Do you have anything for the 99-07 trucks wanting to swap in the 6l80?

I think that is the problem about swapping that tranny is with out the 58 tooth reluctor wheel the ECU can't control it and no one makes a stand alone controller for it

I don't know enough about the 4WD stuff to give you many details.

On the 2WD units, the 6L80 output shaft is the same as a 4L80E, but on the 6L90 the output shaft (and driveshaft yoke) is quite a bit larger.

Almost an understatement John

Here's a shot of the 6L90E yoke alongside a TH400 yoke, which is not an exact fit on a 6L80, but apparently will slide on:

With some background here:

Cheers!

It will work as long as you change the engine to a 58X reluctor. The problem on the newer vehicles is what other modules will be affected by the ECU change. I have no way of knowing what the IP will say, what the driver info center will display, or any of that stuff.

You can look at our 2001 truck swap and see what we had to change to get the gauges working properly, etc. I still don't have back-up lights or starter interrupt. A person could probably custom make a bracket to mount the switch on the side of the trans for those functions, but my main customer base is aimed at the older cars and trucks, not the newer ones.

I wish I had answers for all of the issues on swapping into newer vehicles. You can't imagine how many calls I get to upgrade 05-06 GTO's and Trailblazer SS vehicles to the 6L80/6L90 transmission!

Here's a view looking into the yoke splines of each (6L90 on the left):

The 6L90 is definitely a meaty piece!

Can the 6l80 be swapped into 2008 4x4 sierra that orignally came with a 4l60e
what would be needed to make it work. i know i would need a new column shifter with the tap shift buttons, probably a new gauge cluster that has the manual mode (m1, etc.). what about the wiring and the ecm? If this is possible where could i get all of this? dealer?

Just a matter of $$ &/or Time really. Understand it has been done with 2WD's, and possibly a 4WD. A guy in Europe, one in Vegas, and another guy. Search here: forum.efilive.com .

The challenge with a later model is that most control modules (ECM/TCM/BCM/ABS/etc) need to be matched, so if there is a similar truck with what you want to do that GM makes......

It's a very do-able swap into older vehicles. We are selling many systems for these swaps now, complete with fully functional tap shifting.

But doing it into an 08 may work, or it may open a hornets nest of problems trying to get everything working as the factory intended. There are MANY differences between a new vehicle that came with a 4L60E vs. one that came with a 6L80.

Which one of those new-generation 6 speed transmissions is the equivalent of the 4L80E? Steel planetaries, clutches only (no bands), able to take brutal beatings straight out of the box with no mods, etc?
