Where to find out what bolt sizes are and where to buy them?
As the title says, where did you guys find out what bolts you needed and where did you get them from? Im not having any luck with dealers.
BTW I need bellhousing to block bolts..

I got all my bolts from the Chevy dealer. I too had to purchase bell housing bolts and they are not cheep! I think I spent somewhere around $10.00 a piece and there's like 8 of them I think. GM uses weird diameter a pitch combination that you probably won't find anywhere else. I was able to find some bolts in the parts for sale forum. Try posting what you need in the parts wanted forum and wait a few days.

They are just standard M10x1.5x40 METRIC bolts. You can get them anywhere. I bought a box of 25from http://www.mcmaster.com/, part number 91303A261
In fact, it is super easy to cross thread STANDARD SBC bolts into an LS block.

The only odd hard to find bolt size on the LSx's are flywheel-crank bolts and head bolts. These are 11 MM.
As for everything else EXTERNAL, they will be a standard metric bolt you can find on shelf at most hardware/auto parts stores.
Lets understand the metric numbering M10x1.5x40
M10 = Diameter of bolt is approx 10 mm. Measuring with a digital caliper you may get 9.92 or something very close, round up.
1.5 = distance between each thread peak (or groove). Sometimes its easier to measure 2 threads. Then divide this by 2. So if 2 thread peaks measure 3 mm apart, divide by 2, and the pitch is 1.5
the last number (40) = 40 mm in length.

I have an extra set of them actually. The BEST place to get grade 10.9 Metric bolts is any John Deere dealer or service place. I paid like $.70 each for the bell housing bolts. They had just about every ls1 bolt size except for the flywheel to crank and pressure plate bolts.

How about those flywheel and pressure plate bolts? Stuck w the dealer on those? I need them myself.

I use the dies in my metric tap set. Just thread a die on the bolt, or screw the tap into the hole, if no bolt is available...
A true "dual purpose tool".
Furthermore, most good quality tap/die sets have a thread pitch gauge in them.

I honestly didnt torque any of my engine bolts. I have no problems. The only thing that really matters are the rockers and the head bolts for torque specs so long as you use commong sense and blue/red thread locker where neccessary. I know i'll get flamed for saying that but torque specs can be gotten close enough by hand if you're used to the feel.

Haha well i figure i reuse bolts, threads arent always the cleanes (minimal bolt corrosion, rust... etc) and other parts like headers use different bolts, different flange length clamping, different gaskets, and same as the Victor JR intake different bolts, intake thickness, really factory torque specs are designed for FACTORY bolts and FACTORY gaskets. I'm not saying dont use them I'm just saying i know that after things have been removed a few times and things have sat a while the factory torque specs really arent that much more accurate. I'd rather have it tight as i feel it needs to be with some blue thread locker. I know the bolt wont break off and it wont back out either. I've had no problems. For head gaskets though you must use torque specs and a degree wheel or just rpm bolts and the rockers must be 22ft lb with red thread locker.

Not having random bolts and not having a flexplate is pretty much hoilding up my show right now ...Anyone have a flexplate with bolts for me?

I think they are the same all the way around. I am using the Moroso pan though so theres no way of me telling because the transmission doesnt bolt to that pan. All of the other bolts are the same though.
