What is the deal with head gaskets?

I called NAPA today to get a set of head gaskets for my 5.3. I was dumbfounded when he told me they were 54 a piece. Why is the head gasket so much? Has anyone found a better price anywhere?

They are aluminum, right?
Head gaskets for an SBC with aluminum heads run about $60 a pop.

you can get GM for 35-40 each.
a lot of aftermarket gaskets are WAY higher than oem for the most part.

Thats not that much my Duramax head gaskets were like $150 each along with the cost of 36 head bolts. LS1s just cost money though.

current price at advance auto parts as of this morning.

ls1 HG ~ $22/each
5.3 HG ~ $54/each

it's stupid that the 5.3's cost so much more than even the ls1.
your best bet is gmpartsdirect.com when i needed HG's for my 5.3, i found them there for ~$22/each + shipping. The cheapest i was able to find.

i tell you, i dont see any reason not to run the ls1 gasket.
just a lil bigger bore. may drop your compression a tenth or so.
i just bought some 6.0 gaskets from the dealer. at discounted pricing, they were 36. also purchased some l92 gaskets for 33 each.
