Default msd 6010 box

as soon as my car gets around 5500 rpm it acts like it goes into the rev limiter every time in every gear.does anybody have any ideals whats going with that?does it have a preset rev limiter?

Thats the rev limiter on the pills. You need to tune with a computer, and if you try just removing the pill it will automatically go to pill #3 IIRC

All of the pills have too much timing in the mid and upper rpms. Like SMAX said you need to program your own timing curve. Try 28* max and see how that works for you. Also, try to run as much timing as possible below 1000rpm to keep your idle smooth and clean.

What is your setup? Carb/EFI/5.3/5.7/6.0 What ya got?

Sounds like a terrific engine with some great parts. Got any specs on the cam? First question,....do you have the MSD6010 box or the Edelbrock? I'm assuming from your post that you have the MSD box. Do you have, or have access to a laptop? If you do, dig out the instructions that came with your box. On about page 5 it tells about the rev limiter and on the next page, it tells how to install the software (it's really easy) on your laptop, and then you can change the rev limiter. As you have figured out, it does come factory set at 5500RPM. If you've lost your instructions, you can go to their web site and download and print off new ones and also download the latest software. Hope this helps. Ron

Lots of good info here

https://ls1tech.com/forums/conversio...-dist-ls1.html

Conventional wisdom says the stock chips have too much timing. But one guy on here claims they have too much timing for an EFI motor, that carb'd motors will make more HP with more timing. I don't know which is right.

I have my timing set up like all the guys in the thread above. If you get to a dyno or just do a lot of tuning, post what works for you.

At any rate with your motor you will almost certainly want to set up your own timing curve.

if you dont have a laptop, you can buy a 7550 box from msd. it works much like an SCT or a hypertech handheld tuner.
msd sets it at 5500 for stock motors im sure, and the fact if you dont have a laptop you can spend more money on the products they offer.
sales. doh!

the handheld will do most of the msd functions without a laptop.

if you want to fine tune the timing curve, youll need a laptop.

i havent messed with it lately, but the rpms for the timing curve are in steps.
you can change them, but not like you can with the pro data software (laptop)

If you don't have a laptop, and you don't want to buy the hand held device
(expensive?), you might try what someone suggested on here awile back. Catch all your family, or your wife? gone and carry a battery in to your desk top. Then, slip your MSD box off and bring it in. Clamp the ground and the 12V switched wire to the battery, plug in the serial cable, bring up the program and reset the limiter. Course, you have to either download or install the software first, but that's easy enough. Sounds crazy, but I see no reason it wouldn't work. I can't remember who suggested it, and I don't know if anybody has tried it. Go for it! Seriously, could you get your car close enough to run the serial cable through the window or something...it's pretty long Ron

I had considered buying that box just for simplicity and msd said it worked exactly the same as if it was tuned with a laptop. Glad I didnt buy it or I would have been pissed. Where did msd tech support go so wrong?

best i can say is they thought you were someone wanting to change the rev limiter or idle timing.

ive called and talked with them on several occasions in the past.
you honestly have to sound like you know something or they wouldnt even talk to me.
i wanted some charts/graphs of the timing curve pills, and how the MAP sensor effected the curve. thats since out the window for me, but its information i wanted and had to get stiff to get my answers.
friend of mines 408 wouldnt start and they blamed it on everything but the box.....

Thanks for posting that *xpndbl3*, I always wondered if that would actually work. At least it's an alternative. Also, to * TJ *, or anyone else for that matter, if you want to see the timing curves for the pills, or the wiring diagrams for the box, or the instructions for either of the boxes, before buying (6010 or 6012 )....the timing curves are different for the 6012, and so is the wiring to the cam sensor....just go to MSD's web site and put the # in the search box. You can download and print off every thing you get with the boxes. You can even download the software so you can bring up the timing graphs and see what they look like. You can't actually change them though untill you hook up the box. Ron

I thought the rev limit with the pills was like 6000 or 6200, Mine would break up like crazy in 1st sometimes, i dont remember if it ever went completly away, i did put my own curve in it and raise the rev limit.
