Default Difference between LS2 and LS1 waterpump?

I'm putting an LS1 into a miata with the V8 Roadsters kit, and one of the recommendations is to replace the stock LS1 waterpump with an LS2 waterpump. I believe this, in conjunction with a corvette balancer pulley and a machined alternator bracket will give you more room in front of the engine for radiator, fans, etc.

So I ordered a waterpump for a 2005 GTO, which I believe is the LS2 motor. The problem is, when looking at the part I received from NAPA and the waterpump on my LS1 motor, the waterpumps look identical. Now, it is POSSIBLE, I guess, that the motor already has an LS2 waterpump on it already, but I doubt it.

Does anyone know how to easily distinguish between the two waterpumps?

Cheers,

Dean

I might be closer to answering my own question - I think I purchase the wrong waterpump. NAPAonline lists the exact same part number for the waterpump for a 2005 GTO (with the 6.0L) and a 2002 Camaro with the LS1. Is the catalog wrong or do I need to buy a pump for a different car?

Cheers,

Dean

The pully on the GTO waterpump has the same offset as the LS1 Camaro. I don't think they changed the offset to the corvette even though the engine changed to the LS2.

You will need a LS2 vette waterpump, they show up quite a bit on ebay.

Perfect! Not only did that clear up the difference, it led me to a source to buy one for only $99.

Thanks a ton.

$99.00 is a good price. Would that be a new one or a remanufactured? Either way, its a good price. Whats your source? I need one too. PM me if you need to. Thanks

for future reference anone searching the ls1 GTO's used the same water pump, and if you're hybridding something and want to mess with front drive assemblies or in my case, superchargers, the GTO/Fbody front drive offset is only like four hundredths off or something, the LS2 stuff is way thinner/shorter in relation to the length of the engine with accessories front to back.

MY LS2 out of a 2006 GTO came with the supposed LS1 water pump here. The pulley setup was very close to the F-Body. I did use the corvette style drive because I liked it better and found a good deal on the LS2 looking water pump.

I think either will work just fine.

The GTO Accessories are pretty much the same as F-body Accessories. The Vette stuff is where it gets different.

One more question... Have heard that these newer LS2 water pumps have a higher flow rate than the LS1 pumps. True or false? Anybody know? Thanx

I need a water pump for my setup too. I just now learning this stuf while gearing up to put an L92 into an RX-7.

You guys are corrupting me, I was just going to get a used LS! pump. Now I've got 'mightas' disease! Might as well get an LS2 pump. damn

Looks like the LS2 pump may flow better and still works with the LS1 accessory drive hmmmm

The LS1 and LS2 pumps are identical, except for the water pump pulley, and the pump spindle. We put an LS2 pump on the front end of our LS1, with the '99 FBody FEAD (Front End Accessory Drive). We bought 1/2" LS waterpump spacers from Wegner Motorsports, and used a CTS-V belt tensioner with (4) M10 washers between it and the pump body. The LS1 belt works great. In hindsight, we could have made the spacers 5/16" thick. We did not have to change the crank pulley.

Default water pump parts store electronic catalog

Auto Parts store electronic catalogs are a good source of information, but by no means an absolute authority on anything...for instance, in my stores EPC,for example, performance cams and intake manifolds for the LS-1 showed traditional small block Chevy stuff....and these are not isolated examples....go to your local parts store and find a hands on hot rodder that knows what he's doing, and research, research, research! When I looked for an intake for my LS-1,(E36 BMW), A tunnel Ram for an old 350 Chevy was not what I had in mind.. even though the computer and Petey Part Timer said it would work!

You can also use the vette pump w/ camaro accesories by pulling the pulley out about 3/8". Still leaves plenty of shaft for it, I tack welded mine on after doing that. It save over an inch in front of the motor I'd say. The thermostat & housing were different on the camaro waterpump I had though. My new vette water pump came with the housing but no thermostat in it.

how much run out is anyone seeing on a LS2 waterpump? i'm fairly certain the one i have is damaged as it looks to have about .120-.2 of wobble to it which doesnt' seem right at all.

i'm new to these motors though, so i could be wrong.
