Default Temp Sender cut and thread approach

This is regarding my 86 Monte Carlo SS and the desire to use, among the other stock guages, the stock temp gauge with the LS2 transplant.

First off.. I have been down the path of drilling the head and was looking for an alternative..

I have seen the adaptors but didnt like the fact that the sender would be outside the head due to the difference in size..

Also saw the resistor in parallel with stock style sender but didnt like the curve it produced in testing..

Through this forum I found that LS1MCSS had found that he was able to turn down the stock 3/8 NPT sender to adapt to the 12mm on the LS2 head.

I asked for his help on turning one down and graciously he did.. Thanks!!!

Below is the picture of the end result of LS1MCSS work on my stock sender...

It only takes about 30 minutes, max, to do one of these. I just leave my lathe set up for it so it's ready.

What do you charge to do that, looks like it's what I might need?

I do it free. It's not like it's hard work. The hardest part is walking to my shop. It's 300 feet from my house.

Man, that's good of you but it takes up your time. Surely it worth...maybe your favorite adult beverage? PM your way.

Is this something you can do to the Autometer sender. NOt the short stubby one that adapts into the adapter. Problem with that one is that it doesnt protrude into the head. The other short sweep sender part #Auto Meter 2258 is longer and wont fit through the adpaters small hole. Can this sender be turned down to bypass using the metric adapter?

That's awesome - I wish I would have seen this sooner. I paid a rip-off price to get one of these done for my car.

How far down to the nut do you mill it to and how many washers are needed?
Thanks

I don't cut any farther than necessary and one washer will seal it. If the old threads go all the way to the nut, then I usually cut most of them off.

I don't know if it can be turned down or not. I would have to look at one and measure it.

3/8ths IIRC. I obviously don't know anything about this.
If there is enough meat on the sender to turn it down and tap it to fit the thread on the heads, can any sender be lathed down?

Is the sender for the 1st gen camaro's the same size as the one for the Monte Carlo SS? Or can it be machined to work. It might be to long. If so can I send you one to turn?

What would be the advantage of doing this versus just using the Autometer adapter?

Advantage for me on a 1st gen camaro with factory air is clearance. I don't think I can get the original sendor with adapter in with the factory evap box.

1st gen camaros used a sender that is 1/2" pipe. It's too big to turn down. The mid 80's sender is 3/8" pipe and might be the same ohm rating, but I can't promise it.

I saw one a few days ago that had the actual sender part that was too big to fit through the 12MM hole, but the threads were only 3/8 pipe. I wouldn't try to cut it because I was afraid it would cut through before I got it small enough. So the short answer to your question is NO.
