Default Ls1 dodge ram!!!

I had a 440 in the truck for the past few years and it was cool in all, but it only went 15.7 @ 84 in a 4600lb truck. I know the stock cam was the problem, but its not that simple to just swap the cam in the 440. The problem was it was a stock motor from 1978 and had 7.8 compression, cast pistons, and not to mention the 9mpgs I was getting in the 3 speed 727, 3.90 gears also was killing me.

Since my all motor camaro runs 10.69 with just an ls2 swap heads and cam all motor I figured the same type of motor would work good in the dodge as well. Most of the chevy 5.3 trucks run better then what my 440 has. Also wit hthe ls1 vs the 440 in weight I should come out several hundred lbs lighter.

Truck is getting a ls1 700r4 and np 208 whitch is also alot lighter then the np203 I had

more pics

For now I just lowered the ls1 into the bay, with the stock crossmember the ls1 will be far to much forward and to high for what I want it to be. I'm going to cut the crossmember out, and set the motor as far back and down as I can.

I'm wondering what headers to go with, maybe ones for any chevy truck will work?

I don't think you will have any clearance issues in there. That engine bay could swallow 2 LS1s

Yeah thats what I was thinking.

I want it to me mild, nothing like my camaro. Mainly bolt-ons, headers, already has 3.90's, ls6 manifold, ported tb and maf, dyno tune.

I'm sure the truck will see 18mpgs on the highway. I'm not going to say it should run 13's but if it does run a 13.9 I wouldn't be surprised.

My girlfriends dads new hemi dodge ram runs a 15.3 and it is a 5,000 lbs truck. He has intake, no headers, hypertech tune,, shortbed standard cab. With mine being about 4200 after the swap and bolt-ons I think it will be atleast low 14's

Looks like a great swap, though to be honest, a few well-chosen upgrades to the 440 probably would have yielded superior results. It doesn't seem to take a lot to get a lot out of a good 440.

Yeah , but my camaro is the thing that needs to be fast, the truck needs better mpgs. If I did anything to the 440 mileage would get even worse. I like the truck and I want to be able to drive it more.

Even if I did a 2800 stall wit hthe ls1 mileage will be at least 5mpgs more still and it would seem to have more low end.

Have you thought about using the truck intake for some more torque? There are a million of them for dirt cheap in the parts section and I'm sure you'd have the room. Doesn't look nearly as good though.

Yeah, I really don't like the truck manifold, a few dyno testing showed the ls6 manifold to be near identical hp and tq numbers as the truck one. I think 2-3 hp diff if that.

I tried some f-body headers and they hit the frame, so I need to look into some block huggers. I was able to get a stock 99 camaro exhaust manifold to fit with about 1/2 clearance of the frame rail, but I do not want to run manifolds.

Could you do a T-56 with 4x4? That would get you some bad *** mileage

Yeah I thought about it, I would need a np205 divorced t-case from a mid 70's ford truck.

I think it would just be more time consuming to rig that setup up vs. the auto.
