Default t56 with a bench seat?

I have a 71 Cutlass conv with the bench seat & would like to keep it but run the t56 with my conversion. Does anybody know if its possible to keep it without modification to the seat?

You can put an expensive shift relocation kit on the T56 and move it 11" forward. Not sure where that will put your shifter in your car, hopefully not under the dash.

I went from a Muncie to the T56, and looking at the shifter location change...I am thinking it would be tough to do. Unless you are tall enough to reposition the seat back far enough to clear the shifter. (edit) After I hit the post button it occured to me that I have seen examples of shifter relocation, one of them using a tie rod end that might put you forward enough to not have to touch the seat.

A TKO trans will allow you to put a shifter almost on top of the engine. Some good pics in the link. You could buy a truck type shift handle

http://www.5speedtransmissions.com/dimensions.html

The T56 magnum has a three different shifter postions similar to TKO. Don't think the regular T56 has that flexibility

Could do some custom upholstery on the bench.

I when through that same question and problem as your are asking about.. My solution was to used a Viper T56.

It was able to clear the Bench seat, as the F-Body T56 would come up right on the front frame of the Bench Seat...The Viper T56 shifter is about 4-6 inch forward of the F-Body one.

Here is a picture of the fitting and mock up.. (excuse the temp shift handle.. but it did work LOL!)

I then picked up a Hrust Shifter for a Viper and a Stick that fit correctly for the Seat.

The plus on this is that it is a stronger Trans.. but needs some conversions on the front plate and input shaft.

I think if you bought a shifter handle intended for a bench seat car, you could drill holes to mate to the spud coming out of your trans and be good to go.

Thanks for all the reply's, if I didn't already have the T56 I probably would look to source the Viper T56 or maybe the new Keisler RS 5spds although I would prefer the T56.

This winter I run the mock up and decide what my best options are.

Looks like that is for 68-72 Chevelle. There is a few on eBay.
