5.3 burning oil
I know there are a lot of fellow members using the 5.3 engine so I hope you can help me. My son-in-law has a 2007 GMC truck with a 5.3 with the fuel management system. It has 57,000 miles on it and has started using a quart and a half of oil every 4000 miles. He bought the truck new and has used synthetic oil in it from day one, never using a drop of oil until the last six months. He took it back to the GMC dealer he bought the truck from and they are doing an oil consumption study on it. I have a 5.3 with 87,000 miles on it but no fuel management sysyem and do not use any oil between changes. Have you heard of this problem? Any ideas?
Thank you
Joe

Oil consumption with the newer trucks using AFM is unfortunately a problem. GM has a fix however the results are a mixed bag,

I worked at the GMC dealer until last July.
This is an ongoing issue with specifically the 07-up 5.3 with DOD. The procedure we did was this:
Oil consumption test
Pull valve covers and check for leaky baffles (prob bogus GM fix, but we did find a few)
Pull engine and replace pistons and rings.
Problem solved on most.
I heard there also is an oil pan baffle to install that helps.
I did this on my personal 07 5.3 Silverado and it did work. How long it will last? Who knows. Its been 20k since.

I also am gm tech so far not many 6.0 or 6.2 with oil consumption issues other than the lfa 6.0 in hybrid tahoe. All seem to be ring issues. I have 2 lfa 6.0 2008-09 and 07 5.3 all have aluminum blocks and burning oil. On tear down of all three of them found collapsed oil control rings and other rings stuck and carboned up. The fix from gm is pistons and rings. The other fixes they have are bandaids I think but have to do them in order to make gm happy.
