Good eye, they are in that pic. The previous owner had them on that way, and with them mounted way higher. He did not have any running boards, so he could run them that way to get the wheels centered in the fenders. I have since moved the rear end forward and have them on the right sides and found me some running boards.

Like the project !... I've got a 48' F1, but trying to leave it as a stocker.. since it was my Uncle and is a complete Truck with all of the parts there.. I just need to get the wiring redone as I was able to get the engine to run for a while, it has been in a garage since 1975'.

nisstek did you find a ls yet for the impala?
bczee nice truck looks like it is real solid. sorry about the oil pan.
I have been slacking but I did get my ecm back and have just about everything to get it to run. I need to finish up my harness and wire the truck. I hope to work hard on it this weekend.

Cool build! I just got my L92 and 6L80 running in my '51. I love it. I suspect with the bigger exhaust I'm at about 430horsepower (factory says 405).
Let me know if I can help. The steering shaft and exhaust wanted to be in The same spot, so that took some maneuvering. Ultimately, I made the steering Column into a short version and mounted the wheel more like a modern car than horizontal like an old bus. I added a Ujoint in the cab.
I also built a cover plate for the DBW pedal that is mounted on two thick steel stand offs welded to the firewall. That had me scratching my head for a while (mounting the pedal)
To improve driving position I also straightened the brake pedal (left to right) and cut a few inches from it and rotated it a bit so you step on it vs. push it forward. More like a modern vehicle.
Took some sheet metal work at the lower firewall too.
The trans tunnel cover in my case needed to be raised about 1 1/4" in the front.

This is snaking the exhaust around the modified steering shaft and column.
Excuse the welding. Not my favorite shots. I struggled with getting a nice weld on aluminized steel. Probably user error.
