Default Audi RS6 + LS1 retaining AWD (Project Judas)

I have not been on here in a while and while looking for some info I figured I would post an update on my project.

'Judas' is a 2003 Audi RS6 (one of 2000 imported) that I shoehorned in an LS1 while retaining the AWD.

The build thread is here: http://www.motorgeek.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=39901

Pictures here: https://picasaweb.google.com/1176718...asAKATheRS6LS6

Some recent track testing at NHMS. The stock brake pads were dead by lap 2 and the all season tires were murdered by about the same time, so easing into corners was required given its 4000lb weight. Track pads and tires this should be fun.

What was the advantage here? My RS6 makes way more power stock. And with a tune and downpipes I'm looking for 550HP. Was this done just to say you could?

I bought the car without a motor, it was being parted out so I got it super cheap and had originally thought I would build an Audi motor for it but then changed my mind.

The Stock RS6 on paper makes more power than this, but in reality the area under the curves is less and its more peaky. I suspect this car as it sits would be about the same performance level as a stock RS6 in the 1/4 but likely a little quicker around the track due to its flat TQ and HP curves.

The other thing is that a chipped and tuned RS6 can make good power 500+ AWHP, and up to 750 if you really spend some $$, that is about the cieling for it. This car has a bone stock LS1 with a cam, no head work etc and this is the very bottom of a huge potential. Just swapping in an LS3 with heads and a cam I would expect to see 550+ with very flat curves.

The next step for this car is a pair of 3071 rear mount turbos pushing about 10psi which should net me around 500AWHP on the current LS1, then swap the LS1 for a built LS3 and shoot for 1000AWHP.

The other big advantage is cost vs complexity. The stock RS6 is impressive from an engineering standpoint, but its a time bomb due to the Alusil block, its also a nightmare to work on, this was built to be easy(relatively) to work on. I recently pulled the 6 speed, replaced the clutch and was back on the road again in under 4 hours vs about 20 for the RS6 slush box. Plus if I pop the LS1 I can buy a brand new crate LS3 with a warranty for short money.

But yes, I mostly did it just because I could

p.s. you should see the confused look on peoples faces when I pull into a gas station and they hear it.

That's the best part of any LS1 swap in a non gm product.

Well, its been a long time coming but I finally have some updates on Judas

I had an issue at NJMP towards the end of the track season, the Audi fuel pump partially failed while on track and leaned the motor out and caused some damage:

I took a break from client work (partly) over Christmas and spent some time on my own stuff, namely Judas.

So here's a bit of an update for you all.

I wrapped up the short block a little while back and have been waiting for an opportunity to finish up the motor. The motor is now more or less complete and ready to get mated to the mockup trans so I can finalize the clutch slave, then I will put the real trans on and get it back in the car.

Good stuff below:

Note: The photo's that are good I can't take credit for, thanks to Kevin for shooting these.

Another note: If anyone in New England needs a kick *** engine shop give Randal a call at Precision Balance & Machine.
(603) 889-6211, 5 Industrial Dr, Hudson, NH 03051 Most of the tuner shops in this area that know their stuff use Randal

Short block buildup pics: (balancing too)

Putting the heads and rockers on:

Wrapping up the motor:

KW's in: A huge thanks to Nate at www.034motorsport.com for all his help on the KW's, It was a bit of a drama getting these as KW sent the wrong ones from Germany!

So thats it for now, hopefully this week the motor will be back in and be ready for wrapping up. Stay tuned for more fun.

Glad you guys and gals like it so far

The damper is a GM LS4 from a FWD, it is the narrowest OEM damper I could find. Not sure which vehicle exactly it is from without looking back, sorry. I have the part number documented in the build thread over on Motorgeek:

Oh found it, here it is (2007 Impala SS part #12635650 and stretch bolt #12557840)

Very interested what sort of power you make w/ the turbos, I'm looking at the same ones mainly due to them having internal waste gates. What are you expecting for power?

LOL Im interested in that too

These are Chinese versions at $185 each brand new delivered to my door, oil only cooling. I figure "how bad can it be, they are at the back so if they explode its just a bit of shrapnel out the back of the car with zero chance of bits getting through the intercooler and all the way to the motor. I will put a filter in the oil return line JIC.

The motor is built with a 9.5:1 compression ratio so hopefully I have descent off boost performance. My goal is to start at 7psi and see what it makes, but the eventual target is 20psi.

I could be completely wrong here so please feel free to revise my guestimates. I believe the spec of this motor, if it was high compression that it would be good for up to 650 NA CHP.

From what I have seen online low boost (5-7psi) stock LS1's with zero mods are pushing out between 500 and 700rwhp depending on who you believe. (The previous motor which was just a cam only made 350AWHP on a conservative tune, bear in mind that drivetrain loss through the AWD system is somewhere between 20 and 25% as compared to 15-20% for RWD, so that leads me to thing my stock LS1 was pushing about 420-450 CHP.

I would guess that with 9.5:1 compression this motor NA should put out 550ish?

So.... The few examples I have found for higher boost (18psi) on a stock LS1 with no mods seem to be in the 750-1000RWHP range, again if I can believe them.

I think at 7-10psi I could expect to see 650AWHP and at 18-20psi I thing that would jump to 800AWHP maybe (so right around 1000CHP) (on pump gas)

Thats my guesworks, feel free to dispute and edjumacate me as this is my first boosted LS motor.

I did just make 1000lbtq at 2800rpm and 800HP flat to redline out of a twin turbo RS6 motor that is built to the hilt

Ha, no experience myself to dispute anything. I was going to go w/ GT28's but am scared they'll be too small, seems some of the early twin turbo LS1 kits did use them but were only good for ~500chp. Once I found the GT30's can be had w/ internal gates I've pretty much settled on them, for packaging reasons/wanting to keep them in the engine bay. (this will hopefully be going in a '93 BMW 3 series... if it all fits)

My goal in an *easy* 600rwhp, not stressed, but w/ built in room to go higher should I feel a "need" to turn up the wick.

Good luck w/ the turbos, I hear everything from "they're fine 100k miles no problems" to "OMG IT BLEW UP" Have fun!
