Just wondering what some of you are doing for an SES light in our vintage cars? Mine is a 1965 Buick Skylark. I will be making my own instrument panel behind the current glass face. I plan on LEDs for the turn signals but thought there might be something on the market that says SES.

 

I converted the factory "dummy light" gauges in my 66 Chevelle to the SS style gauges. These gauges are actual gauges rather than warning lights. This left the warning lights on the dash unused. I plan to use my "GEN" warning light for the SES light. I may end up using the "TEMP" or "OIL" light to remind me when I have my converter manually locked.

In my 70 nonA/C car the panel in the top center of the dash where the A/C vent would be I drilled a 1/2" hole in the panel and mounted a green light that I bought at the local parts store for an SES light. Green only 'cuz they didn't have a red or orange one.

 

Just used a Red Led light.. no biggie.. wire and mount just about anywhere you want.

Some have used the OEM GEN light (or any other) on your exisitng dash if it is not being used.

 

Just an FYI, if you use an LED it has to have a resistor with it (or built in to the LED Assembly) so there is a load in the circuit. If you dont put the resistor, the wire will 'look' like it is shorted to ground.

I went to the junk yard and pulled the "service engine soon" piece out of the dash of a late model car and put it in my original dash where the unused "temp" light used to be.

 

Damn that's what I was gonna say, looks good, and what I plan on doing. If you get it out of a cluster that's already dicked up they may not charge you anything for it.

 

I saw something on another site that should work too. This person took some colored film gel (the stuff professional photographers use over their lights to change the color in a shoot) and put it over the overlay in his gauge cluster to change the color in the cluster. You could use some of this film, cut to fit, and get a SES sticker made to go on it. It would be a cheap route to go if you wanted to try it. I like the idea of stripping the SES piece out of a later model though. I just may do that in mine.
