Default 5.3 in a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo?

So, I just bought this jeep yesterday, "pics soon" its basically a bone stock Jeep, and holy christ is it the most gutless thing I have ever driven. So I am already thinking of ways to fix this problem.

Has anyone done a 5.3 or any lsx swap into the older Cherokee's? I picked this thing up for 4k as a winter beater so It's not like I'm worried too much about being a purist with it.

Any mods worth doing to these that I can do for cheap until I attempt a 5.3 swap? What about the 6.0 swap? anything think I can pull a TBSS guts and transplant them into the Jeep? The reason we got the Jeep is one cost, two 4x4 and three, the wife likes the size better then the other SUV's.....

Any idea's on the swaps would be great, but I have to maintain 4x4 , I don't need another 2wd, the Camaro and the Trans Am are enough for me until I get the vette...

Any thoughts or idea's would be great... Thanks.

The craigslist add. Already did a complete restoration on the headlights.

I always wanted to throw a LSx into one. Try a SEARCH. Someone had done it all ready.

If you decide to do the swap, better plan on upgrading the differential /drive shaft/brakes.

PLenty of 5.3s with 4wd. Pick up a wrecked one and gut the whole driveline, that should make it easier...

Looks like a nice Jeep, too bad you paid about $3K too much if you already want to swap engines!By the time you spend another $3 to 4K,and factor in what your time, sweat and aggravation is worth,it would be way smarter just to buy a $10 to $12K Trailblazer or Tahoe...I was considering picking up one of the GC's sitting around here with a grenaded 4.7(more than a few available, and others popping up on a regular basis) and doing the LS swap, but I don't really think it is a smart move, even if one could be grabbed for less than a thousand bucks.

OK,cool-sounds like you are prepared for this, keep us updated.I'm kinda stubborn,I'll still likely give a Grand Cherokee LS swap a try in the near future too if the right Jeep and engine deals fall into my lap!

There was someone on pirate4x4 that has done the swap not really that hard. Used the 5.3L and a 4l60e NP241J drivers drop.

He used a clocking ring for the transfer case IIR. Also there was someone else that had one on there look in the Cherokee section.

I don't know how much snow you get in Amarillo, but if it's going to be a winter vehicle, you would probably want to have a transfer case with a fulltime option like a NP242 which is probably already in the Jeep. I've heard you can swap the input shaft of a NP241c with the NP242 and it will bolt right up to the 4l60E. The 4.0L may not have the power you are used to, but they are reliable as heck.

I just run in 4high in snow covered roads. Don't need any fancy AWD. Plus the AWD will wear out if actually beat on it off road. As most those transfer case won't lock together unless in 4low.

Snow covered roads aren't the problem, it's when it is in patches. The NP 242 has 2hi, 4 hi fulltime, 4 hi partime, and 4lo options. Not inferring his wife isn't a good driver, but it's best to have a fulltime option when the driver isn't quite aware of how a partime case works on dry pavement.

I like the transfer case setup currently. My moms old TB had a similar one though. In the end i want to keep it as "stock" as i can with a real powerplant in it. Im sure a better gear set would also help for off road. It just seems like currently it wouldn't have the power to climb steep inclines. We will also be using it for camping trips so some off roading is going to be part of what we need it for.
