Default 4L60e transmission with cable speedemeter

Transmission guy says he can put a rear shaft housing on a 4L60e that will allow me to keep my cable driven speedometer.

Is that correct?

He says it will still have MPC?

The engine is a 2004 5.3 that I was going to connect to my old TH350 transmission.

Does this all sound correct???

Can the tail housing be from some GM transmission other than the 2004 4L50e connected to my engine?

I did not think it could.

I thought the housings that have provision for speedo cable will not fit.

It would be a lot cheaper to get the Cable-X and use the stock speedo.

VSS stands for Vehicle Speed Sensor. It lets the PCM know how fast the vehicle is moving to allow proper shifting, Speedometer output and factors into various other calculations inside the PCM.

There is only one place on the tail housing for a connection.
I can not see how two things can be connected to one opening.
The tranny guy says it can be used to drive a VSS or a speedometer cable.
If that opening is used to operate the Speedo cable the question is:
How bad will the transmission operate without VSS?

The conversion tailshaft housing has provisions for the mechanical as well as the VSS. That's what makes it unique; otherwise you could simply bolt on one from an earlier trans if the VSS wasn't necessary.

Okay, why and when is the VSS "necessary"?

If running a e-shift automatic it's required for operation. The 3rd pedal crowd can sort-of get away without one.

The path of least resistance is to run a VSS.

That means electronic speedometer.

Is there a cost effective gauge package?

Run your TH350 and use this Speedhut.com GPS speedometer. Unless you want an original looking speedo. It might solve some issues on retro fits. Just throwing ideas out there.
