Default Real World Fuel Economy. What have you gotten with your swap?

I am planning on putting a 4.8 in a 1975 Mercedes 280. The EPA fuel economy rating for a 2000 Camaro 5.7 is 17/26 while a 2003 Silverado 4.8 2WD is rated at 14/16. Obviously this is not apples to apples because a Camaro is lighter and way more aerodynamic. At any rate fuel economy is important to me but so is saving money up front on the motor. Does anyone have any real world mpg numbers on their 4.8 swap into a car?

Well I have done all 6.0 swaps but the one I put in a 94 firebird gets between 28-30 when driving normal. My monster cam swap in the 96 gets 24-26. It's all in the tune really

MPG has alot to do with driving style. You can get 30mpg on a tank but get on the gas a couple times and you kill the avg. MPG.

Your car should see mid to low 20's pretty easy with a 4.8L. The key is if you do alot of hwy driving set the final drive and tire size to give a low cruise RPM.

I am praying that I can get close to 30 with my car. I am thinking I am going to run the stock truck cam for a while. But with ported heads, LS1 intake, and 1 3/4" Long tubes. 4L60e with a stock 2075RPM converter and 3.73's I doubt I will.....

With a 4.8/4L80E in a 2007 2500 Express Van, I get 21 MPG all interstate with cruise control set to 65 mph. The van with cargo was probably 7000 lbs. I should think 30 mpg in a car that's much lighter than the van and is more aerodynamic should not be a problem.

My fuel economy is OK but there are a lot of things working against me. Until a few weeks ago I had a very restrictive exhaust and I am still picking up 100+ degree air from under the hood until I make a new cold air setup.

Even with the previously mentioned afflictions and a fair amount of WOT time, I still get 17+ mostly city.

...and it's never been tuned for economy or power so I know there is a lot of both left in the combo.

86 Trans Am, LS1 with heads, cam, full exhaust, etc. Built 6spd and big strange 12-bolt with 3.73s. Stock 2000 WS6 wheels and tires.

I used to avg around 25-28 when I was just driving normal. Which was hard to do haha.

No one believed me when I took it to OBX and avg around 32 mpg. When some of the 4cyl cars had to pull over for fuel, I was still ok. Those cars are great when empty. But trying to go highway speed while loaded fully down...they dont get the advertised MPG haha.

Its amazing what we can squeeze out of these newer motors yet still retain drivability and MPG to some extent. Sometimes even improving on both...

98 Wrangler LS6/4l60e with 4:10 gears. 16 mpg around town. 18-19 mpg at 65 mph.
1973 Camaro L92/tko 600.3:73 gears. 21-22 mpg around town and freeway.
1967 Nova 427 LS2/4l60e 3:50 gears.17-19 mpg around town. 20-21 mpg 60 -70 on highway.

Tough to keep your foot out of any of them.
