Default Steering upgrade for 69 Chevelle

Hi everybody
Looking for some constructive advice as only want to upgrade the steering once!
I have a 1969 chevelle c/w ls2/4l80e. I replaced all the steering parts when motor was installed but still not happy with the "feel". It is a standard ratio manual steering recirc box.
Any advice on which way to go. buy a fast ratio recirc box or swap out to a manual rack and pinion. Only issue I see there is all the rack and pinion kits i have seen are all power.
So any advice or suggestions would be extremely helpfull
you can reply here or email me direct at chevy468bbc@yahoo.com
thanks!

Why not go power and slap a grand cherokee box on there? I'm not an expert by any means but I've yet to read anything that makes me think r&p is worth doing in these cars.

I agree with Chuck... Check into the GC box swap.. many have done it. .if not, checkout Lee-powersteering.com

I am just using a rebuilt Quick ratio box on mine that I got a the GoodGuys swap meet. Its not to bad, but I think I would like a quicker turn in.

Another option would be to just send your steering box off to Chip at http://www.powersteering.com/

Chip is fantabulous...have him do the rebuild with a 12.7:1 fast ration conversion. It will be a night and day difference and you can keep your original steering box. At least look into it.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee swap is cheap and easy and will tighten the feel of your car. I just did this on my 67 Malibu and everything you need to know is here:

Grab a used Nascar box off of eBay,the old style ones are dirt cheap and the new style Delphi lightweight boxes are priced reasonably.Just pug in Sweet,CJR or Turn One into the search and you will have a bunch to choose from.

I agree with the GC swap. I did this on my 65 Sportwagon. A world of difference.

I am running a Lee box on my Chevelle. It has a lot less power assist than any stock box. The GC boxes work ok but I have heard they are a crap shoot due to age and abuse issues on junkyard versions.

Nobody said you had to but one from the junkyard, there are always 30% coupons plus 8% more back through ebates at advance auto. With the gc box you can also use the ps pump lines on the ls motor. Lee would probably be ideal since you can get exactly what you want, but the gc isn't a bad budget option.

Gc box from rock auto and the rag joint from lee steering. That's about the cheapest and best way to go. I'm not sure but I don't think there is a core charge at rock auto.
