Default BUDGET Custom Console, Digital Gauges, GPS Via Android Tablet.

Hello All,

This is My First YouTube Video, Going To Try To Make Some How To Videos Which I Should Have Been Doing For A While Now. This Video Is Part 1 Of A Multipart Series On How To Make A Console From Scratch, Then Integrate A Android Tablet Into The Console To Use As The Gauges, GPS, Music and More. First Series Is Kinda Boring I was A Little Sick But It Gets The Point Across. Let Me Know What You Think.

Nice work. Over the past two years at SEMA we have been seeing a lot more Ipads/tablets being used like this. I think it is a cool look and relatively cost effective (when you look at how much a set of gauges can cost). There were quite a bit of companies out there offering free 'Gauge' Apps so you could configure the screen however you chose.

Very cool. I'm working on a console for my chevelle too. I should have mine upholstered in the next week or two.

I've been using a similar setup using the Torque app on my Android phone via Bluetooth. Love it. I have mine setup to show water temp, intake temp, and since my car no longer has a radio, I also have a clock. ANY information that the ECU reads can be displayed, real time, on a phone or tablet. So much easier and cleaner than running a million wires and hoses for aftermarket gauges.

I am also using a Motorola / Andriod based tablet to use the Torque app to display PCM information via a wireless Bluetooth adapter. It also has a plug-in app to do Track Recorder (laps) using GPS...

Thanks guys, yea what motivated me to do this was the fact that a full set of autometer gauges were gonna be like 700 bucks, why do that when i can get a cheap android tablet off craigslist and a 20 dollar obd2 scanner and whalah, digital customizable gauges for under 100 bucks, that and i needed cup holders sooo bad. itll be next week or so before i can get to the next part, as this weekend will be spent moving to the house im purchasing. whoop whoop no more cluttered fathers garage. once there ill be starting on the next part, along with some new projects ill be starting on the 67 camaro and chevelle. im debating on doing dual tablets, one in the dash for gauges, and one in the console for gps, music, internet etc....

I got mine off amazon.com, from reading the feedback on some of them the blue and orange one's tend to have a higher failure/DOA rate. I think this is the one that I have.

If you go to Torque's site they offer a blue tooth adapter for $199, a little pricey but probably much more reliable.

I used THE PLX ADAPTER for a couple reasons. The ebay ones had a few complains about them being bad and I didn't want to deal with that. And I wanted to hardwire my into the ignition so I didn't have to turn it on and off every time. I think it was about $100

Good job. I am watching this one. I subscribed. I made a small one from aluminum and was toying with fabbing a full length console for music, cups, storage. The tablet idea is pretty sweet. Keep it up.

Paint over fiberglass (or any medium) requires good bodywork skills, leather is more forgiving and carpet will hide the most flaws.

I personally like the look of leather sides and a painted top giving you a two tone effect or all leather (either monochromatic or two tone). You could even do leather sides and painted top in the same color with the different materials supplying the contrast. It really depends on the theme of the rest of your interior. The last thing you want is the console to LOOK like it was a home made after thought.
