Default 1984 190e 5.3

Im new to the forums and I have a question is it possible to put a gen lll 5.3 in a 190e why a 190e you might ask I figured since it would make a great sleeper do to (4 doors) its RWD from factory light weight (2900 pounds stock) and I only paid $400 for it
I figured i using the 5.3 ls because I could get parts cheaper than the 2.3 (don't worry its the 8v) and there's an almost infinite aftermarket support for the 5.3 keep in mind im still in the blue print phase of this project but ive already bought the car any advice would come in handy now my goal is are to make it a street/strip duty as for budget im looking into a tight 3-4 grand and keep in mind to keep costs to a minimum ill be doing most the work myself and a few friends

... where it belongs. Use the 3rd gen internal forum when your ready to build up the 5.3
I always wanted to do this with a 230 SLK. I researched a bit and found out the SLK uses a Can-Bus. It's a system to reduce wiring complexity. When you put on your turn signal a series of pulses is sent thru a wire and everything on that wire listens. The pulse tells the signal, "I'm talking to you, turn on". When you hit the brakes a different signal may be sent thru the same wire and the brake lights know the computer is talking to them. I'm no expert but that's how I understood the explaination.
If the '84 190E uses a convential wiring harness you should be able to find that diagram and seperate the 2.3 from the rest of the cars wiring. If it uses a Can-Bus it will be a science project. The only person I know of that has swapped a LSx into a car with Can-Bus is Brian Hinson .

Oh and 84Mercedesguy, don't think that Old Geezer and Paul Bell were being hateful by moving your post. The intentions were good; this is the section where your likely to get the best answers .

thumbs up! I've got a ('92) 500E and would like to have more power!
The DOHC all aluminum 5.0 liter is pretty similar to Ford's coyote motor in displacement, power & torque, variable valve timing, etc. but 20 years ahead of Ford.
Good luck!

I don't think CAN systems on mercedes came in until the early 90s. I think you'd have a straightforward electrical swap. Not sure about how it will fit, but there is always a way.

My biggest concern for this swap is the wiring due to lack of knowledge of the computers, sensors and getting the gaugesall accurate(dont mind swapping them out) oh dont forget lights so basicly when it comes to wiring im lost but im willing to learn

I looked at those cars and I couldn't figure out a cheap way to make the swap with the rear steering. everything is in the way of everything.

sub'd to see how you figure it out.

oh and don't let the wiring intimidate you. just do it step by step and it'll turn out fine.
