Unhappy Need advice on a frame for my ls1

I just took the tranny off my fiero last weekend and found a gigantic crack in the housing (well, I did only pay $150 for the frame). I really DON'T want to put a 4spd standard in here (the only standards I can find for sale are 4spd), and I have yet to find someone selling a 5spd for a fiero unless you buy an entire car (which runs in the $2000-$6000 range because they were only available on the GT editions). I was told by someone that they had used a "porsche tranny from a mid-mounted model" to fit a 2nd gen 350 into their fiero, but I can't get a hold of the guy to find out what specific tranny that was, nor are the fiero boards I posted on giving me any responses.

I'm contemplating just selling my frame for scrap and trying to find a different donor vehicle, maybe not even a fiero, but something else that's lightweight, like an old porche 944, or a dodge daytona (are those rear-wheel drive? it'd be fun to try to get that piddly turbo on my LS1), perhaps a 300Zx, thought of doing a civic conversion and taking the driveshaft and differential from a TA and bolting it to a gutted frame, or maybe even a fox-body conversion since I can find the 4banger editions for about $1100. changing frames screws with my budget a lot, but if need be I can wait 4-5 more months to save up for a different frame.

any suggestions on what I should do? from the way the crack looks, I think someone dropped the tranny on the ground at some point in time and I wouldn't want to risk using the tranny if it were possible to rebuild it.

Well, my friend has 3 V-8 Fiero's and he doesn't have an issue finding transmissions. He's gone through 3 or 4 from the torque of his 1st gen.
small block...and racing at the track. Shoot me an e-mail and I'll ask him
if he can get his hands on one for you. Later...

i believe you can use the tranny out of a beretta or cavy if you want a 5spd. not 100% on this but i seem to remeber reading that is where teh drivetrain components of the fiero were sourced from anyway, so the swap shoudl be straight forward.

They probably used a tranny from a Porsche 914. I know there are a lot of 914 sbc conversions out there. The 914 Trans are 5 spds.

I put a Beretta muncie 5 sp in my 86 Fiero. Only had 2 probs; you need a Fiero 5sp shifter and the speedo signal was for a digital dash.

In order to use a porsche tranny in a fiero you'd have to mount the engine longitudinally and stretch the wheelbase and body. Lots of Lamborghini kit car guys do it, but I'd say it's of the question for a stock body car.

A daytona is FWD, so I'd scrap that. 944s make excellent Ls1 candidates. 300Zx will have differential problems with anything above a stock motor unless you use a 90-97 model, and those are still fairly pricey. Fox bodies are a superb swap candidate, and they are available for as little as $500 if you do a little digging.

well, a 5 speed trany was not only offered in a GT, however it was fairly rare. I had a fiero. It was a 88' base module. It was a 4 cyl. also. I was told by some fiero guy who bought my car that it was made by isuzu or somthing like that. However he did say that it wasn't a very good trany but who knows, he coulda just said that to try to get the car cheaper.

The fiero wieght is around 2650 stock, that's the base 4 cylinders. I don't kow how much they go up from that.

It will probably require alot of mods but a car that is very light that you wouldn't expect are saturns. I had a 98 SC2 it was around 2550. that's a decent size car. And the older ones. like my 92 SC2 wieght just under 2400 lbs. Now that's getting light. And I know its light, the motors only make 123hp and I put it down on some Z24's civcs and some others. Yeah yeah civic racing.

Good luck with the project.

you can buy my 92 if ya want

How did we go from LS1 powered Fieros to 120hp Saturns? Did I miss something?
