we are in the process of doing an LS1 swap with 4L60E transmission in my 1970 Chevelle, but we have a problem. the alternator is hitting the steering box. Has anyone experienced this or have any suggestions on how to fix this? thank you

I went with the high mount PS/alt bracket from Speedway motors:

It depends on the engine mounts you use. The Hooker 68-72 A-body rear-bias engine brackets will allow you to use a 4th-gen F-body alternator bracket in your car, whereas the Hooker forward-bias engine brackets will not.
The problem you're going to have is trying to accomodate a 4L60 transmission with the low-mount alternator. The engine needs to be forward biased to allow the 4L60 to clear the tunnel and achieve optimized U-joint operating angles without cutting anything, but the low-mount alternator fitment requires the exact opposite in fore/aft engine positioning.

I think factory F-body alternator mount typically interferes with steering box.

I have the rear bias hooker engine mounts on my 1970 GTO and it fit with the F-body factory alternator bracket but it was close to the 800 series steering box. When i installed a 600 series steering box the alternator hit the steering box so i am now using the speedway bracket along with the factory f-body alt bracket so i could get more belt wrap. If i had to do it over i would use the (Vette style) hooker accessory brackets. Live and learn...
