Default Jeasus.....the cost doesn't stop

I thought i could do a swap for $3000. Plus or minus . MAN WAS I WRONG.
6.0 with 4l80 in a 87 chevy truck. I'm pushing $8000.
engine and trans needed rebuilt , all off the shelf parts , no shortcuts.
Shout out to speartech, mast motor sport , Texas speed . Dakota digital , lokar, fast , brp hotrod ,
All that's left now are the $100. Parts here and there.
I don't think there is a end in sight. LoL

I got so sick on my latest project that I completely quit keeping receipts. I dont want to know how much over budget my last 2 projects are. That way if I decide to sale them, I have no idea how much im loosing.

The so called "little things" will eat you up. They add up real quick.

lol I know just how you feel, What started out as a simple 6.0 4l80e swap in my S10 last fall ended up being a frame off build ( as in bare frame)with LSA supercharged 6.0 and tr60606-speed/Holley Dominator EFI/ Narrowed frame, 14" brakes and a who's who list of parts.
I stopped counting after 15k. It's not so radical that I can't drive it everyday but I have so much time and money into that I only drive it after work when the weather is nice.

What started as an budget ls1/t56 for me ended up with a new subframe, lsa and all new brakes and suspension. I haven't added things up in a while but I'd be shocked if it was under 15k. I've probably spend a thousand dollars in hoses, fittings and fluids. Stupid stuff adds up quick.

I hear you my brother.

That is why I went crate motor and brand new mail order transmission. Just paid the price up front rather than risk rebuilds, LOL!

The good thing is it never really stops. Once you get it running you will start eyeballing upgrades.

I started a spreadsheet with my build so I could keep track of part numbers if I need them in the future and foolishly added a column for price Luckily my wife hasn't seen that. All those little things definitely add up.

^^^ This. I hate inheriting someone else's abuse, lack of maintenance, etc.

I feel your pain, however proper planning, realistic goals and eliminating project scope creep will eliminate these problems.
Good project planning takes time and experience. Resisting scope creep takes discipline.
It can be done - even on a budget.

After reading the first few posts, I was thinking this exact thought... Project Creep. I think that is where LS swaps can get in trouble. And the LS swaps can be done on a budget, check out my build named "penny pincher" haha

No - that is a morphed form of the swap/scope creep virus we all have. 🤓

Let's face it guys - scope creep is baked in to the very nature of a swap.

Every decision I make on my current project includes the question "is this scope creep?". The theme of the build is to get it running and driving, so every time I start thinking suspension or interior or paint or whatever, I have to bring it back to the basics of running and driving.

Even with this focus, I have still replaced all of the body mounts just because they were so bad, as well as some of the suspension bushings. I'm using used 4th gen Camaro exhaust manifolds, and last night I caught myself thinking about blasting off the rust and getting them ceramic coated, until I realized what I was doing. For me it's as much about time as it is about money. I want to drive this car, not have it sit in the garage.
