Default Custom Corsa exhaust setup?

Im curious whether anyone has tried buying a second hand Corsa catback, cutting the system up, and plumbing the main pieces into their conversion setup?

I love the way Corsa's sound, and I HATE drone on a car. As in, drone makes me effectively hate driving the car. It ruins the experience to me. I've got a corsa catback on my CTSV and its perfect. No drone, loud when I want. If I could just pay Corsa exhaust prices to get one on my Rx7, I would. (Alas that option doesnt exist)

So... Im curious, has anyone bought a corsa, cut it up, and used it in their custom application? I was thinking about finding a used example that had muffler dimensions that would fit (https://www.summitracing.com/parts/c...t/model/camaro ??) Grabbing the mufflers, tips, and X pipe from it and custom connecting them under the car with stainless.

If anyone has done this, how did it turn out? Im wondering how much drone was re-introduced by moving the pipes and distances around a bit? Im sure it wouldnt be acoustically perfectly tuned any longer, but how bad would it be? I figure if someone has tried it, they could share.

Also, Im totally aware of helmholz resonators. In fact, I added them into my existing catback setup. They worked! But they are extremely difficult to package, you can see them under the car sticking out like a pair of giant elephant ***** (they are ugly), and they add a bunch of weight. The idea of a muffler that already has that built into it to hide it is very enticing.

Thanks!

A lot of Flowmaster mufflers have Heimholz chambers built in, and flow freely besides. You always hear about Flowmasters droning, but that is because most guys buy the simpler series 40's that do not have the Heimholz chambers.

If you have the room --- a pair of OEM mufflers with the helmholtz chambers built in work phenomenally well. I did this with mine -- used two 2015 Coyote 5.0L OEM mufflers. Quiet at idle, cruise. Nice sound when on it hard. Absolutely no drone at any rpm. They manage 420HP with little loss --- the "kids" who bolt on the aftermarket catback systems only see a few HP on the dyno. However - they're big. Packaging may be an issue on the 7.

GAtsma - I've never seen a Flowmaster with a helmholtz chamber. Got a picture/diagram?

Here's the 5.0L muffler cut open - you can see the anti-drone chamber on the left side -- an opening for soundwaves to "bounce" around - but no exit.

The ones on the Flowmasters are very much like the cutaway muffler above; a passage into a closed chamber. Go on their website and look at the Series 50 or 70 (not sure of the #'s anymore, lol) and check the cutaways and descriptions.

Interested in this. Some one on here has bought two C6 Corsa mufflers and added them to the rear of an Fbody. You may be able to message him asking if there is any drone.

https://ls1tech.com/forums/paint-bod...storation.html

Within that thread there are some dyno videos.

I would ask Corsa if you can buy some mufflers since you have a 100% custom application and they do not make any system for your car. MAYBE you can get them to sell some to you.

Off the top of my head I would look into Mustang SN197 and S550 systems since they put glass pack style mufflers out back under the trunks. Which would make the mufflers fairly small compared to a C6. Cora systems for Fbody's use a single large muffler similar to the OEM system.

Amazon Amazon

you can just buy an axelback for another car and cut the pipes off and use the mufflers. its expensive but if you want corsa its a way.

i was able to score a corsa catback off a GTO guy years ago for 500 bux. i ended up reselling it for 800 because i didnt use it.

There is a 13/14 GT500 axle back setup on Craigslist for $500 in Columbus OH.

Depends on the size and quantity of mufflers you need, but should be real easy to do. Just takes money and little fab work.

On the other end of the price spectrum the OEM Coyote mufflers I used were "free + shipping" on ebay.

I would argue that there was as much R&D put into an OEM system as there is for the Corsa.

If the OP likes the sound of a stock Coyote muffler then that's a great cost savings.

My guess would be that a LOT more R&D goes into an OEM system given all the regs they have to comply with that aftermarket companies don't.

LS3 through Coyote's/Speedway Stainless cast manifolds/2.5" spun metallic high flow cats/2.5" system w/H-pipe sounds like this -- https://www.dropbox.com/s/ixhnl8fkt6...ound1.MOV?dl=0 --- which sounds an awful lot like the Ford 5.0L that was in the car before.....LOL.

To kill drone only, the stock mustang mufflers I'm sure do a great job, but if OP likes the raw unadulterated Corsa sound...then there is no mistaking a LS motor with Corsa.

If I had something LS, no doubt it would have Corsa on it. I too have gone down the path of adding Helmholtz Resonators into a 04 GTO and 95 Camaro Z28.

My 04 GTO had the Corsa sound, but it would drone terribly until I added a Helmholtz resonator, which then made it tolerable.

Yikes -- WAY too loud for me. But then, the reason I went OEM was because every aftermarket bit I tried (Flowmaster, Spintech, Magnaflow, Bassani, etc.) was too loud for my old ears. However - we all like what we like. I thought based on all the 'noise' the Corsa was going to be quieter -- does sound good though! As long as it's on someone else's car.....LOL.

I don't mind a loud car, as long as it's only loud outside. Like OP, I HATE drone and interior noise.

Currently running a full size chambered Stainless Works muffler on my Camaro with LT's and catless midpipe. No drone and makes for a good cruising exhaust.

LOL - almost 5 decades of playing with these things - I've yet to come across one that's quiet on the inside and loud on the outside....

Wow, that sucker is quiet! If the mufflers on my car are to loud I’ll definitely be looking for some stock mustang ones.

Sound is so subjective. Loud, too loud, quiet, too quiet, harsh - all terms that are only meaningful to an individual. Additionally, other exh system component differences can/do affect quality and volume. So just because mufflers are the same doesn’t mean it will sound the same. Add to that the vaguries of different phone recording quality and playback via the internet and you get this - this area more than any other it’s almost impossible for one person’s experience to be helpful to someone else.

And we haven’t touched on intake noise which often plays as big a role inside the car as the exhaust noise does
