Default LQ9 Turbo Mustang

What’s up guys! Been a reader on here for a while and this is the first thread that I am starting for my 87 Foxbody LQ9 build. The car will see probably 90% track use. I’m located in central FL for what it’s worth.

So just a little background on the car....got an 87 Fox with an 2002 LQ9/Th400 in it. The car was completely gutted when I got it, no ecu, wiring harness, etc. So I’m planning on running the Holley HP efi with an On3 turbo kit. I know I can get away with running a worked factory ecu but I don’t have any tuning experience and the Holley platform is very user friendly from what I have read, and will allow me room to grow down the road.

My goal is to be a fairly budget oriented build that will push a light foxbody (the interior is completed gutted down to the bare metal, no dash, ac, full chromoly tubular front end, etc) into the mid to low 9s using a cam only turbo LQ9.

After sitting in the garage for a few months I finally got the motor and tranny pulled. I am going to disassemble the engine to double check everything since the motor was somewhat rebuilt by the previous owner. I got everything down to the short block tonight and everything seems to be real clean.

I was was relieved to find out that it does in fact have floating pin rods. I had seen some discussion on various forums that all LQ9s were gen 4, but some had stated it wasn’t til late 04 even in the LQ9.

Ive got a long road ahead of me to get it going, but I thought I would start a thread to keep track of the build.

Here’s some pics of where I’m at and of the engine internals.

thanks for all the help guys. I still dont know why the pics are sideways on the computer but ill try to get it squared away before i post more pics next time.

One quick question.....

I currently have the stock truck intake and dbw throttle body. Only problem is the car didnt come with a DBW pedal etc. I am leaning towards running a nnbs/tbss intake to take advantage of the 90-92mm throttle body size anyways, but would rather run a DBC throttle body.

Since i am going to run Holley HP i should be able to put a DBC throttle body with IAC on the nnbs/tbss intake and be good to go correct?

Yes that will work. A stock Silverado throttle cable would work great if u wanted.
