Default 1967 Chevelle turbo 5.3

After countless hours searching on the interwebs for any one who has used the Hooker Turbo cast manifolds on an A-Body Chevy, I was unsuccessful. I decided to try them out. The driver side manifold went on with little effort. The passenger side manifold was tight, but it fit. So if there is anyone out there planning on a similar swap and running a turbo, Hooker nailed it. So now, the amount of tig welding I have to do has been reduced quite a bit. I’ll put up some pictures shortly

That would be great...I'd like to see how to see driver's side fit...

Is this going to be your build thread? If not do you have one already started? The Holley folks are doing great work and supporting the hobby. I have been to their development shop in Bowling Green and while it is a very unassuming place from the outside they usually have a lot going on, some very talented people with apparently good support from the corporate side.

Yes! I been looking for pics of these manifolds installed forever. I want to use on my 71. I'm like you, the less welding the better. The crossover fit well around trans?

Nice. It's always a challenge dealing with our steering shafts. Cool that you shared there is another choice out there for everyone.

looks good. It might be helpful to others to know what motor mounts/plates you went with, what position the engine is in relation to the stock small block.

Does the crossover pipe stay in front of the trans pan or go under? I'm just wondering if a deep trans pan would have any interence with exhaust crossover.

Sorry, I totally forgot to put pics up of the driver side manifold...

The driver manifold fit with like over 1” of room between the steering shaft.... as far as the motor mounts, I used the stock frame mounts, and bought some adapter plates from EBay for like $25... they came with the hardware too.. I used poly motor mounts and had to elongate one of the holes to line everything up but it fit. I probably spent $75 for plates and mounts.. I almost had to use the Holley Pan 302-2???? The shorter one. The GM Muscle Pan was junk.. definitely doesn’t fit.

the cross over tube fits perfectly under the transmission (under the TC) the v band flanges needed some forcing to get aligned but its on.
Ignore the wires lol, this is the driver side manifold!

Little 3” SS exhaust pipe I made to feed the turbo.... I will be re doing the flange.. went cheap and I greatly regret it.. the 3/8 holes were threaded but they didn’t use the correct drill bit.. it was too large. As soon as I went to torque the turbo housing on the flange they stripped.

Where the turbo will sit

Don’t knock my TIG skills, just getting into welding in general for this project

Default This will be my build thread

Here is the roller

You can’t see it, but the rear bench is in the trunk.... and it’s in terrible shape

Got sound deadener in
New carpet
Sanded and painted the dash. Ditched the stock gauge cluster and went with Classic Dash
Driver side vent window... I will address fixing this later.... new ones are $700
Got the front grill and headlights in. Starting to look like a Chevelle!!
There is the back seat! Had a guy in Ceres recover it.. he did an awesome job and was quick! If you guys are in the Central Valley, hit me up for his info if you’re interested. The front seats are scat... I don’t know what happened to the front bench but it was not with the roller
Dash is in... notice how the space where the radio usually goes is solid.
Got the bumper on.
Drum brakes are gone and I put discs on from right stuff detailing
Here is the dash radio face... I used my wife’s Silhouette Cameo 3 vinyl design cutter thing to make a template for 3 gauges

Default The engine

Lm7 block (yes stock bore, yes I should’ve bored it but I didn’t want to.)

ARP Head studs
TSP Rods and Corillo pistons

FTI th400, full manual reverse VB

Ahhhhhh the best part... deleted a lot of EVAP and smog related stuff... left the O2s. Will be doing a speed density tune so no MAF. I did have to add a IAC and IAT and TPS. LT1swap.com had all the info!!!!

What was removed (stock harness was a drive by wire)

Ended up ditching these forward facing headers for the Hooker cast 8510 manifolds
THIS IS THE STUPID GM MUSCLE CAR PAN..... what a waste. It fit in the car but I couldn’t turn!!
Not to mention, the sump would be a ticking time bomb if I kept it.

Went with the Holley pan! Fit perfect

Look at this.

Motor mount plates

Thanks!! Looking back I probably could’ve spent that $$ elsewhere but too late now

Good stuff man. I just mocked these manifolds up on my 67 with the Hooker frame stands and 4th gen fbody mounts. Same experience (tight to passenger upper a-arm), but otherwise money!

Will be following to understand downpipe routing, cold side plumbing, etc.

i forgot to mention that the passenger side hooker “log” was a super tight fit near the upper control arm. For right now, I am just running a tube straight from the turbo over to the intake. Once I get all the bugs worked out I may get an intercooler.

As for the downpipe, I’m waiting on some 4” SS tubing to show up... I measure and I have just enough room between the passenger side crossover tube flange and the firewall, as well as the passenger side head to the frame of the car.

Back on post #10, how did you anchor that short length of the header heat wrap?
