Buying Holley Terminator X Used?

Buying Holley Terminator X Used?
I'm currently researching and gathering parts to LS swap my 1993 Caprice wagon. In the course of doing so, I've found more than one instance of Holley Terminator X systems being listed on local classifieds (such as Marketplace) for what appears to be a good $1000).
I know there are a lot of caveats that have to be included in this conversation (can I see the item in person and pay in cash? Is the item real? etc...), but assuming all of these things are true, here's my question.
Is there a way to check a Terminator X system to ensure I'm not buying a paperweight if I'm buying used?
Thanks in advance for your help!

I wonder if Holley has a service to "go through" used ECM's of their mfr?

You can also see if the seller will make a video of the unit being powered up and have him do things with the 3.5" handheld. Maybe running through the Wizard to load an initial tune.

Is it used as installed and removed? or used as in purchased and removed from original packaging and not run on the car? There are a lot of people that start a project and change direction. Just need to be able to jump on it when it happens. I am a fan of buying stuff and saving where you can. but you run the risk of buying the same pieces a few times. And a lot of waiting. I'm learning with this build to just save and buy new.

I do Holley remote tuning and I use TeamViewer software for remote access. If the seller is willing to connect power to the ECU and connect the tuning cable to a computer, you can log in remotely and check if the ECU will communicate with the laptop. If it does, chances are it is in good shape.

For instance, If I had a car battery, would it be possible to do a temporary hookup to check function?
