Default LS1-->RX7, its done and on the road! pics!

take one part 1987 RX7 Sport.
add in a 1998 LS1 and 2000 T56.
spice up with a turbo-2 RX7 rear end with LSD.
mix with mounts and mods to fuel/cooling and electrical systems.
top off with incredible suspension and wheels.
this car rocks.
2600 pounds of serious LS1T56 joy.

Nice pics and great job on the conversion. How does it drive/handle? Did you use the t-56?

I used the T56, even modified a WS6 aluminum driveshaft to fit to keep the weightgain as small as possible. the car handles incredibly well, the FC chassis even comes stock with aluminum lower control arms, hubs aand diff/pumpkin, so with the nice coilover suspension the car is on rails, it kicks out easily and predictably too, I'm very glad its not out of control with full throttle. the handling was completeyyl unaffected by the swap IMO, but shifting the T56 tranny does take some getting used to, I came from Hondas where its effortless and silky smooth, the T56 seems more trucklike but I'm getting more familiar with it everyday.

the install of the engine/tranny was simple with the mount kit from www.hinsonsupercars.com but the rest of the project was serious work.... fuel upgrades were new pump, regulator, lines, filter, fittings, etc. new radiator, finding hoses to fit right, making mounts for the new radiator, etc.

the electrical wasnt too hard at all, but was tough to find the right info the first try, its prettymuch this-
remove rotary engine and all wires that went to it.
toss in LS1T56 and its harness and PCM.
wire up 12v+ to the PCM, ignition 12v+ to PCM, wire from PCM to backup lights and electric fan relay and run the ignition start wire right to starter. ground harness to chassis, ground block to chassis in 2 spots, wire battery right to starter then to alternator then to main chassis fuse block.

heh, thanks guys!
it sure pulls hard, I took it out for some romps this weekend and man it really moves, the LS1 is such a beautiful motor!!!!!!!!!!!

if you wanna see more pics, even of the entire buildup, I've got loads of pics online here - http://homepage.mac.com/owen_the_soy...toAlbum23.html

the budget was 10grand for everything, and I still kept it just under that, insane huh?

but I'm excited to get a few more things hooked up (tach, speedo, etc) and the install cleaned up evenmore, then lets hit the track! my buddies LS1FC hit 12.6 on bald 245's, I hope to see at least that on the older 255's I've got now. In the springtime after some tuning and possibly longtube headers with fresh 275's out back, I'd like to see this thing pull a 11.99 !

this RX7 weighed 2625 in stock trim with A/C and P/S. Now it has no A/C and the P/S pump has been removed, plus I found a stock RX7 aluminum hood to save another few pounds, so hopefully the LS1T56 and Turbo-II rear end (LSD and 4.10 gears, stock!) will only have added another 50-100 pounds onto the 2625 figure.

I'll be taking it to some friends scales this week if it doesnt snow!
