Kilroy's 99 TA

can we come up with a list of different year/model cars that would be good candidates for an LS1 swap, and give them a "score" based on how difficult the swap would be and what the end result, performance-wise would be?

This would be a good reference for those of us contemplating a hybrid but not sure where to start.

Kilroy's 99, I think you're going to have to be a bit more specific and narrow things down a bit. As far as I am concerned anything with 4 wheels is a candidate for an LS1 <img src="gr_grin.gif" border="0"> <img src="gr_grin.gif" border="0"> <img src="gr_grin.gif" border="0">

Seriously though, as for GM products, anything that came with a V-8 or six cylinder should be able to have an LS1 swapped in.

'87 RX7 Turbo II is my choice. Not heavy, about 2800lbs (after swap). Aerodynamic as crap. Very strong rear-end with 4.10 gears. Engine and T56 fit great. Still have cruise, cold air, good in corners. And chicks really dig the old thing!

I too like the RX-7 for this swap. Good weight distribution after swap, good handleing, and a lot of parts cars. And the stock turbo motors are 185HP, and cost a lot to build up, properly. Throw in a stock LS1 and you have a 11-12 second car.

Yup, look for posts by jeromio and LoneStar1, there are also a couple others who are attempting the swap right now, and I'm thinking of going that route myself if I find me a complete LS1/T56 combo for a good price.... Check out http://240z.jeromio.com/ , he's got some good pics and info concerning the swap...

Okay heres a list of my LS1 swap in choices, and I'm planning on at least one of these myself

FD RX7, always liked the newer body style
94-96 9C1 Caprices, from LT1-LS1
a "sleeper" Sunfire, scare the crap out people with that one!
2000+ Impala, either have to go RWD, or use the Caddy trans.
Nissan 240, already RWD, great cannidate
S10, making of a REAL S10 Xtreme
Triumph Spitfire
pre 99 Honda Accord, sleeper, **** off those rice boys with the "it took domestic power, to make this import car fast" claim
Buick Reatta
80s Olds Cutlas, Chevy Celeb, ect! major sleeper!

I prefer the Porsche 911 for the swap because, you do not add any weight to the car(car weighs 2720lbs).
The body style allows you to go any speed you can push out of the LS1 (180+ with supercharger and 10.8 to 11.2 through the quarter mile and still streetable). With the Toyjet Kit you do not cut any body parts or splice any wires to do the swap (see @ www.toyjet.com and www.toy-jet.ls1fun.com. You can drop the motor out of the car in less than 30 minutes (drops out of the bottom, it takes 5 bolts).You do not loose any comforts of the car. Handling did not change and last but not least, MY WIFE LOVES TO DRIVE IT and it puts a smile on everyone's face who see it and it draws a crowed everywhere you go!

The Caddillac Catera would almost be a perfect bolt-in platform, since its platform is the same as the Austrailian Holden cars that come with the LS1. You could probably use all Holden parts to make the swap.

I'd like to see a 99+ Mustang Cobra with an LS1 under the hood <img src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" border="0">

Another cool idea would be to take a GMC Typhoon and set the LS1 under the hood and keep the AWD drivetrain! Put a 422ci sucker in that truck!

There was a guy on the hybridz.org board that was considering the Holden/Catera thing. There's some (old) discussion there about with an Aussie who had some specific info. Apparently, there are some signifigant differences between the Catera and the Holden that would make it more difficult than a mere drop in. The engine bay in the Catera is apparently smaller and I don't think there was enough data on the robustness of the catera diff.

But there was agreement that it would be do-able. The guy (forget his name) was looking around and found that those Catera's had terrible resale value (probably due to that wimpy-*** V6) and picking one up in good shape wouldn't cost too much.

It is a damn shame that GM doesn't have the gumption to introduce a Catera sized car with a V8. And I'm appalled that they have soiled the cool Impala name by applying it to the car currently available - ick.

Nine Ball, have you seen Lingenfelter's twin turbo LS1 AWD S-15 Sonoma in the March '02 CHP on page 28! Accelerates at 1.4G's and ran 10.48 @ 132.15 <img src="gr_grin.gif" border="0"> <img src="gr_grin.gif" border="0"> <img src="gr_grin.gif" border="0">

I really like the looks of the new Impala and Monte Carlo SS. They are looks-only cars with weak V6s and front drive. An LS1 and rear drive would really improve them ...

Well, since the T/A is sold... I might as well start planning my next project car?
I'mma thinking either '87ish Fiero or G-Body.

Only prollem with the Fiero is finding a transaxle that'll live up to that kinda torque/power.
Only prollem with a G-Body is finding one that isn't rusted to hell and back (specially the doors)

This will probably surprise you, there is a lot of pent up demand for 83 thru 90 Mercedes W126(300SD,380,400,500 SEL) small block chevy conversions. There is plenty of room for a small block, so an LS-1 should fit fine, and eith a nice stroker assembly (382 or so), cam and aluminum truck heads should put a torque rich, octane freindly 400 hp to the wheels. If anyone wanted to do it,Iv'e got a lo-mileage doner(I'll pay) and a good LS-1 block or two laying around. If any kind of kit comes out it,I'd think about backing part of the venture. No Joke....Will
