Default Can I lengthen mass air wires?

Is there any reason I can't lengthen the wires to my mass air meter, if I use good wire and solder all of the connections?

I wouldn't. I am not positive about it, but I think it would be a bad thing. Those wires are sending extremely precise voltage signals to the PCM. Even the best soldering may cause a small voltage drop across that wire. You can buy MAF wire extensions for the LT1, so I assume those or other extensions would work for the LS1.

LS1 MAFs send a frequency signal, not analog voltage. I say go for it. If soldered, your connections will have lower resistance than the connector in the extension harness.

I did. No issues in 2 full summers of driving. I've done some MAF logging and the output looks really good (normal).

I would prefer to lengthen them by soldering and heat shrinkin the joints than with a plug in extension. The connectors will add a lot more resistance than if the joints are properly soldered.

With solder it'll be fine but... you CANNOT lengthen the wires for the O2 sensors. I tried it once and the solder wouldn't even melt. The wire seemed like it was made of steel or something. Had to throw a new O2 sensor in the trash...

I think they are stainless steel wire, solder should stick to regular steel. I tried to solder on new connectors and that worked Really Well , needless to say I had to buy new sensors.

You can't lengthen the o2 wires itself. You have to extend the wiring harness side. If you extend any input/reference wires then use shielded wire to block out EMI.

I had to extend a few wires on my engine, like starter motor and crank angle sensor, so far so good with crank angle sensor, well engine seems to run normal.

Just use good wire, same size and amp and solder or use good connectors, do a check before and after as well.

Old post bump from the dead. Found it searching this question:

Is there any wiring in the harness that's sensitive to being lengthened or shortened? The VSS twisted pair seems like it might, but that's just a guess.

Dakota digital makes a vss signal unit that can go pretty much anywhere and the wire is super long. As long as the wires are insulated I don't see that it would matter, within reason.

A little lengthening or shortening wouldn't bother most items UNLESS you end up with a bad connection making a section of wire transferring less amperage than the original size. As a drastic example , a large battery cable with only a few strands remaining in a damaged spot will still read correct voltage, but not allow enough amperage to start a car.

So lengthen or shorten correctly & no need to worry. I usually like to use extra comparable wire from another car harness, as parts store wire can be much lower quality.

Doesn't take much digging with an efficient search.
