Default Junkyard Gen II Iron vs Aluminum

I am in the process of bringing my '73 Camaro back to life. I have heard that the iron truck Gen III engines are more plentiful and cheaper than the Aluminum Fbody/Corvette stuff. Anyone have any info or opinions on this matter?

A iron block will take more then an aluminum but I doubt your wanting those power levels.... Its all personal preference really. You could suck up the extra weight with a cam and LT headers....

They are certainly more plentiful GM made a lot more trucks than FBodies and Vettes. The 5.3s are probably the most common, more 6.0s are being made now than before so they are becoming more common. The LSx parts will interchange with them, the accesories are different. They are a great alternative and can be found for less money.

The truck motors are plentiful, which means the prices are low. Go to a truck only salvage dealer, and you'll have plenty of choices. LQ9 HO motors are starting to get pretty common too. The GEN III iron block weights only 63 lbs more than the aluminum LS1 5.7.

just so you know the iron block weighs 100lbs more than the aluminium. that's from actually weighing the two blocks not taking a spec from a book ( which is were everybody gets the 63lbs spec) I think the block weighs about 50lbs MORE than a sbc iron block but don't quote me on that

Don't forget about the L33s.... all aluminum 5.3. They can be found in Envoys, Trailblazers, and some full size Chev and GMC trucks.

But you'll pay almost as much for the aluminum blocked 5.3 as you will for an LS1. At that point its almost as easy to justify an LS2....

The weight difference is not insignificant between the iron and aluminum blocks, but for the difference in $$$ you can make up for the weight plus a bunch.....I just picked up a complete 2004 6.0L for $1200 (with 26k on it). Tough to beat the price of the iron block.
