Default Hooking up to a third gen tranny?

Alright, I've been looking around the forums and getting lots of info on swapping an LSx into my third gen Iroc. I'm pretty sure that if it's in my budget, I'd like get do this conversion with an LS6, otherwise it's gonna be a later LS1. First thing I gotta consider is how it's gonna hook up to my stock 700R4. Not sure what kind of power these tranny's are rated at, or how easily it'll adapt to an LS6. I don't plan on keeping the 700R4 in there forever, just until I'm ready to put in the 4L60E, or do the 6 spd T56 conversion. Until then, I'm hoping the 700R4 would work for awhile. Thanks!

a 4L60E is nothing but an electronic version of the 700R-4 so the dimensions should be roughly the same. Bellhousings may be different, I'm not sure. Are you worried about the "physical" fit or if you can make it work with the factory electrical harness?

I can always modify to accomodate a physical fit of a different tranny, and I'm sure there are bellhousing adapters if needed. Am kinda concerned with the wiring harness, and if that old 700R4 will stand up to the HP increase.

Im using a 700r4 behind my ls1,bolts right up except for one bellhousing bolt on passenger side,no big deal.I modified my throttle body and mounted a tab to it for the tv cable to hook too, works fine.So far its been holding up to the power.

You're just as far ahead to get a complete pullout of an automatic car and just use the LS tranny. It makes more sense that way vs working out flywheel adaptors and working out the TV cable and the convertor lockup and so on. The LS pcm is pretty good at controlling that stuff I'd just let it do it.

Just my opinion...but if you are planning on swapping the 700r4 out, now is the time. The LS tranny can be found pretty easy, and its designed to go with that motor, so it SHOULD last awhile for the power. Ive never had much luck with my 700r4 trans. I only have a 305 TPI and the trans I have now is slipping and grinding and I smell trans fluid all the time. This is my second trans...and I had the first one rebuilt once. Im not a crazy man behind the wheel, no neutral drops or anything like that...but its a performance car, and I drive it accordinly. Just my opinion...

If you are going to do the swap...might as well address the trans now. If you are going to go to a t-56 in the future...now is a good time for that also. But...I wouldnt trust my or any other stock used 700r4 behind an LS1. Especially me because I KNOW I wont be able to take it easy on it...

Dont take this as me discouraging you at all... just my opinion. You might be ok with that 700r4 for awhile. I actually wasnt aware that the LS1 would bolt up to the 700r4... Maybe Im getting that confused between the LT1 t-56 and the LS1 t-56...? Ide just take it easy on it is all. Good luck!! Post some pics when you get started!

I decided to just do the tranny swap when I do the LS swap. I decided this before I was able to read your comments, however, based on the fact that the converter lockup started making a bunch of noise today. Your opinions valued just the same tho
