is this a good price on a pulled LS1 motor?
newb Q's on LS1 ok here's what i got. a guy i know has a 99 corvette LS1 motor for sale. it comes with everything but the alternator, ps pump, and the computer. he's asking 1000 bucks for all that. do you think that is a good deal or not?? now with that said here is the kicker, the guy tells me that the motor was over revved and is now making a kind of tapping noise. the motor runs but makes noise. any of you know what the culprit might be for the noise. if you have an idea of what it is do you know what it would cost to fix?? and finally (for now) this motor is goin in my TJ so what do i need to make this motor a stand-alone motor. oh yeah it was a 6 speed motor.
The tapping could come from many things. It could be as bad as spun rod bearing or it could be just a rocker arm has lost it's needles (common ls1 prob). So w/o tearing it down it's hard to say. As far as making it a stand alone system check down in the conversion section there is a ton of info down there. Oh and I will go ahead and say it b/f everybody else jumps on you the SEARCH button is your friend When it's working correctly.
1000.00 price os OK but you may need Rod and or main berings they are over 100 per set. if crank needs turning that is 100 bucks. bent push rods are maby 80.00 used. could have bent valves used heads could be 300 bucks gaskets could be a few hundred bucks too .. good luck
if you know your way around engines, and it's something as minor as a bent pushrod or a bad lifter, it's a great deal for a longblock with a few accessories.

Like they said... That could be a damn good deal on a motor, especially with the Corvette accessories and brackets. It's your call depending on how mechanically inclined you are. I have sold LS1 Fbody motors for 2k$ for example in running condition.

Verdad Gallardo well i picked up the motor today. got it home, put it on the engine stand and was going to call it a day. but i just couldn't resist so i started tearing it apart. pulled the valve covers and everything looked good. pulled the drain plug out of the oil pan and nothing but water ran out for about 5 seconds followed by some black sludge and i eventually got a little oil to come out. then i pulled the oil pan and discovered the culprit. it was a spun bearing on one of the rods. the crank is a little scored but it can be fixed. i though ok well this is not such a big problem. then i pull the passenger head. one of the pistons had about a quarter inch of rust dust on top of it. the guy that had it before me had stored the motor with no plugs in it and water got in it. but besides the piston and the rod bearing everythin looks really good. i'm stoked and ready to get it fixed and buttoned back up and in my TJ and get that puppy going.
