Default Starting Problem - Help trouble shooting

98 LS1 in 88 GTA, been up and running for a few months now. Over last couple of weeks I've started to have problems with it starting. It's not consistent so making it tougher to trouble shoot. I think it's the starter solenoid going bad but not sure.

First few times it wouldn't start it was right after driving for a little while, stopping for a short amount of time and then trying to restart. Thought it was a heat issue (stock manifolds). This happened two or three times.

Last week it wouldn't start after just being parked outside at work, about 98 that day and parked on blacktop. Still thought it's probably heat.

This morning sitting in garage, parked for at least 8 hours no start.

Nothing on this is consistent. Sometimes you turn key and get a click, sometimes no noise at all. If it clicks you can try on and off a few times and it normally starts. If it's doing nothing you just walk away, bang your head and come back later. This morning when it wouldn't start I went back 10 minutes later and it turned right over.

I've checked physical connections on the starter and grounds. I wired the starter by running the purple wire direct to starter just like it was set up on the 3rdGen.

Any input appreciated. Hate to go buy a new starter and find out it was something else.

I had the same problem for about 2 days. One minute everything is fine next minute I try to start it and all I could hear was a the remote solenoid click then nothing....turns out the lead on my +ve batt terminal was loose. I disconnected the leads, cleaned them and tightened them right. Problem never came back.......could be a loose connection somewhere. Check your grounds to

Thanks for the input, I'll go back and physically check connections again by removing, cleaning if neccessary and putting them back together again.

Sounds to me that you got a bad starter/ loose connection. I would check the loose connection first. I had the same problem with my 89 camaro starter. Just took off and had it checked and sure enough the starter was no good. Im pretty sure its your starter. Keep us updated on this.

Checked all the connections last night and couldn't find anything that was loose, no damaged wires, etc. Hit everything with a wrench again just to make sure, including all my grounds. Then tried to recreate the problem. Start then off many times in a row, works everytime. Left it idling, hood closed until it got hot enough to kick on the fans. Turned off and started right back up. Let it sit a while to sort of heat soak, started right back up.

Guess I'm in wait and see mode at this point. That's why this has been tough to trouble shoot, it just comes and goes.

I recently had nearly the same problem with my car. I'd turn the key over, hear the starter click once and then I lost power to the whole car. I thought it was a bad starter so I replaced the starter and the same thing would happen...Power would mysteriously return about 5 minutes later. It doesn't sound like your problem is as bad but for me it ended up being a bad ground running from the negative terminal to the chassis. Car starts up everytime. It's probably a grounding issue.

what about the switch at the bottom of the column ? i assume the ignition is rod driven to a switch 3/4 of the way down the column.
