My 6.0 1971 Olds Cutlass
#202
I have made some progress since my last installments. I received the correct SPI tank this week and figured out what to do with the trans fitting for the 4L80E. I went out and bought a $8 Spectre 3/8" fuel fitting and had it welded to the factory fitting after it was milled down a bit, It will work great in the confines of the trans tunnel.
I will be starting the car next weekend, I have everything and just need a few hours.

It's alive! We fired it off tonight for the first time, it started up with a stock LQ4 tune but was dumping fuel from the 42# injectors, I uploaded a tune from a Magnacharged/mild cammed 04 GTO and it works but needs to relearn. After 1 year and 8 months here you go guys!

Well all in all it was a good weekend. It fired up but was throwing the p0343 cam sensor code of death. After a few hours on tech and losing sleep over the possibility of having to change cams, I trouble shot it down to an open in the harness. I piggy backed the connector and it fired up but still would not idle. I did some work in HP tuners and have since been able to get it to idle down to about 750 rpms. Throttle response is ridiculous. I have a few other issues, IAC temps where around 111* just idling after startup (65* in the shop) and the tach does not work. There is some clean up to do now and I need to re-route fuel lines and get the harness figured out.

This is an awesome build! It sounds like you' ve really done your homework on this project! I' d love to do something similar, like perhaps putting an LSX in my fox body, but I dunno. I think I' m too stupid to pull off all the work you' ve put into this project.

My main issue right now is the thought in my head that something is wrong electrically. I have no O2 sensors in the car and do not get a SES light or code, the motor rolls over for about 8 seconds then stumbles to life, no tach output from pin 10 (RPM does read off crank sensor to the scanner, just not off the cam sensor to the gauge)
- The O2 problem I believe is because the ECM has not "called upon" the sensors yet, because it has not ran in closed loop yet. I need verification that the fault will trip after the ECM tries to use them for closed loop, vs. enabling the fault right from startup. Any insight?
- I think the extended cranking may be a tune issue
- The tach I am fairly confident that it is wired correctly, I have briefly looked into it and found no faults. I do not know why this would not work unless going back to my O2 sensor issue there is a problem in the SES/fault enable portion of the computer not showing a cam pos. problem. But this would not explain the P0343 issue I already resolved, it activated the SES and displayed the fault. I verified in the tune that all these DTC's are enabled.

Great build. I admit I have myself thought about a ls1 in my 67. The money I spent getting 500 reliable hp out of my bbo would have built a 1000hp ls1. A year after I built my combo edelbrock came out with there heads now they even have a vic jr

B18CYA: Sounds like you got a pretty healthy BBO there. I was in process of collecting parts for a 388" SBO stroker when i said F'it and started this.
I had to replace the front seal due to a pretty serious oil leak, I should have listened to my buddy who told me to replace it when we did the cam. The Magnacharger crank pin kit was a PITA to get back lined up while putting the balancer on, it finally went on after cooking the balancer in the oven at 350* for 20 minutes, I just had enough time to line everything up before it tightened up. I have troubleshot my no tach output down to the computer. I am going to take the ECM in to work, apply power and a false cam signal waveform and check the tach output pin to be 100% confident. I'm glad its not the sensor, I do not want to pull the blower off to swap it. I have lower oil pressure than I would like, ~37psi at cold idle. I believe the pump might be cavitating at the pickup o-ring, so I'm forced with the decision to remove the engine or not to look into this. I think the pump should be making much more pressure than 37 psi, its a Katech ported LS6 with 5w-30 mineral oil, I was planning on 55+ psi. The needle moves slightly to around 43ish when it revs.
My driveshaft parts are on order and when they get there I am measuring and sending the dimensions to Weller Truck Parts in Grand Rapids MI. They are hooking me up with a custom shaft for the right price. I am using 1350 solid body u-joints and a Denny's driveshafts custom 4L80E slip yoke.

HOUSTON WE HAVE A TACH!
The addition of 4 volts to the tach line did the trick. I set the tach resolution in HP Tuners to 3 and 3, now shes dead on. Another issue tackled.
The good guys over at Magnacharger are writing me a tune and hopefully I will have it tomorrow.

It idles better than it did initialy but still needs some work. The tune the Magnacharger folks wrote me I have not loaded yet so I do not know if it will help or not. They are very cooperative and helpful so im sure they will iron it out for me if it doesnt.
The oil pressure I am not too worried about right now, it is still cold out and I am running thinner oil so I am going to change to 10w-40 full synthetic and see what happens, as long as it stays where its at I am going to run it.
I changed my mind from Hooker Aerochambers to 12" Dynomax bullets, I cant see spending $160 on mufflers right now.
My driveshaft was built today in Michigan and will be on its way down here to NM tomorrow, hopefully i will be driving it in 2 weeks
