Is this a retarded idea for a LSX swap?
I got an old 89 Firebird Formula 5.0/5speed. For a sleeper project I was thinking of getting a used LS2/T56 from a GTO, full exhaust, find a used 12 bolt rear, some minor suspension things ( SF connectors etc.. ), some wheels/tires and slap it all together.
Would this be the same as a LS1/T56 into an IROC? Could this be done for around 10 or 11 thousand?

What do you mean "Is this a retarded idea for a LSX swap?"??? Nothing in your post sounded remotely retarded, to me anyway! The only thing I don't quite know about is calling a Firebird Formula a sleeper.
This, my friend, will be a sleeper. Twin Turbo 454 in a beat up 89 Silverado work truck.

The truck is midway through stage 1 of the build. I'm building in two stages: Stage 1 will be the 454/4L80-E conversion, Stage 2 will be the build-up. I'm actually pulling the cab today and am gonna set the engine, transmission and transfercase in. Then, after that's done, I'll set the cab back on and wire everything up and run with it. I'm actually building the truck to be a work truck that is capable of towing the **** outta something! The way I see it is that even if you build the truck to tow and work, a TT 454 couldn't help but to be fast too!

Way to hijack the thread guys. =) But no, it's an excellent idea for a swap. I'm doing an LSX/T56 on a thirdgen firebird right now. Tons of info available and lots of parts seem to make the project a fairly straight forward one. If you're serious about this idea, join thirdgen.org. Excrutiatingly helpful sight in addition to this one.

in terms of doing this with a budget of around 11 grand, it might be possible, but I think that LS2 would add some more expense. However, if you manage to score a great deal on the engine/trans, sit down and carefully plan what you want to do, be sure to resist any "well, while i'm in there..." moments, and have a clear goal for your car, you can do it. Again, the only thing that could make this budget unrealistic is the desire for an LS2, but like I said, if you find a good deal, go for it.

if it was me, i would get an FBODY pullout.. because you want the fbody accessories, the Fbody T56, the harness is easily adapted, ect...
then, sell the LS1 whole.... use that plus some of your remaining cash for the GTO/Vette/aftermarket/whatever engine...
if you're doing the swap yourself, and you do it smart, you can have a cammed LS2 or perhaps even better, sitting under there...
