Default 67 Camaro LS1/ T56 transplant data gathering

Most of the installs that I have seen so far, all use the aftermarket A/C units and remove the factory A/C evaportator housing from the firewall. Is this cosmetic or is the big clunk just in the way? I saw an 86 Monte had the # 8 coil and plug wire smushed against the housing...
I'm jazzed about the install, got a 2001 SS drivetrain last week, but have another project to finish first, so I,m in the data gathering mode. Any links, pics, or opinions are welcome. I think I have already decided the factory console 4 speed hole is out of the question....by about 4 inches. Lots to learn.

Thanks for the links, I hate searching, it's a lazy streak. I had seen most of them execpt the photos, and as I expected, the A/C evaporator is going to be ugly. Hey, if it were easy everybody would do it. And like the instructions on the installation kits always say "Some assembly required". Thanks

I'm still trying to decide if I should tackle this project, stick with a carb motor or just get a 4th gen.

Give Phil Brewer a call at BRP. He built the YearOne 69 Pacecar (LS1) last year and sells many of the required conversion pieces to do these swaps. I'm getting LS1 motor mounts from him that bolt right up to my SBC mounts, and I'm also getting a custom T56 crossmember from him. He also has a nice 98-02 rack/pinion conversion kit for 1st gen Camaros. As for A/C, he sells a set of adapter plates that allow you to install a Vintage Air kit (about a grand) on an LS1, using the Vintage Air supplied compressor.

Nine Ball,
Does BRP sell a bracket to move the Sanden A/C compressor to the top right on a F-body LS1?

I have talked to BRP, and seen the work they do. Nice stuff. I was looking to see if the factory A/C evaporator could stay, since it works. One less thing to change out. It looks tight, maybe too tight to change #8 plug. I would like to keep as much factory equipment as possible. BRP mounts move the engine a little farther forward than the Street and Performance mounts, that's so S&P can sell the brackets and pulleys, and get the accy's up away from the cross member. I would like the best of all worlds. Factory accy brackets and pulleys, the motor back enough to help balance the car, and for it all to fit. Now that's not asking for tooo much, is it? When the install begins, I'm sure I will take the simplest route, and follow suite with what everybody else has done.

I spoke with Vintage Air about a month ago, and they told me that they could custom design one of their 1st gen kits to use the LS1 compressor. All they would have to do is make some custom hose connections to adapt it to their kit. I think the price was in the low $900 range for a kit without their compressor.

I used BRP's motor mounts and kept the ac and alt in their stock locations. I also used the LS1's compressor with the $18 dollar ac line converter and hooked it up to a Vintage Air Gen II compact unit. Everything fits and works fine.

OK, I give, aftermarket A/C it is. Using BRP mounts, where does the shifter pop up through the floor? Is there any possibility of using the factory console? Or are we going to be too far aft.

You can use the factory console, but it will have to be relocated back. I think about 4-6 inches from where it currently is.
