If so, did you use the LS-1 compressor?

Nope. Had to use the sanderson compressor. Most if not all after martket AC systems don't use the compression style fittings that GM uses. Plus the serpentine systems are set up for the sanderson as well.

Yes, I used the LS1 compressor with no problems. I installed a Vintage air compac gen II system. LS1 compressor stayed in its orignal location. For the fittings at the back of the compressor, Vintage Air has a conversion kit ($18.50) to convert to #8 and #10 fittings. I spliced my turn on switch from my Vintage air system to the ac relay that used to be controlled by the PCM. It turns on the compressor if the low pressure switch is satisfied and the PCM also turns on my electric fan. COOL!!

That is good news. I think it would be easier to take a non a/c car and add a vintage air kit..

I utilized the stock Astro compressor. Built new bracket to hang on drivers side down low where alt used to be.

Nope, my dry sump pump is sitting where the a/c compressor used to sit

Used a Seltec Compressor, fabricated brackets to mount it near the stock lower right location.

I made my own bracket and had to use the LT1 compressor & tensioner. Here's a pic of the bracket prior to welding

Here's a pic of it installed:

What is the difference between an LT-1 compressor and LS-1? The one thing I hated more than anything about my LT1 car was the way the compressor always cycled

I would be very interested to know if the stock LS1 compressor will work with the Vintage Air system. I have talked to several people who say they asked Vintage Air who says it WILL NOT WORK, something about the LS1 compressor being 'variable" whatever that means. They say the LT1 compressor does work.

67LS1 Camaro Project: Is your ac system up and running with the stock LS1 compressor???

No mine isn't working but I am still diagnosing. My ac gauges indicate the same pressures on the low and high side indicating a bad compressor. Phil at BRP told me that they did a Nova with the LS1 compressor hooked to a Vintage air system and it is working fine, which is why I am trying to use it. The LS1 compressor is a variable speed compressor and Vintage Air does say that their system will not work with it, but I believe it will work but it may not be as efficient as a single stage compressor. If it blows cold air then I will be happy.

I was emphatically told that I couldn't use the original ac compressor and that I would have to buy the Vintage Air system withe the Sanden 508 compressor.

I can't imagine where it would matter. All you are looking for is a differential pressure from your high to low side. As long as you have that pressure drop your system should cool. I really don't think it matters where the pressure comes from. Actually I think the compressors are the same anyway. The mounting points on them are different and I think that's it.

The compressors are completely different. LS1 is a V7 (7 piston compressor) Sanden is a 5 piston. The V7 is variable displacement pump(better efficiency). I have done my homework and suffice to say, the V7 compressor will work with the Vintage Air system, no problem. Also, the V7 will never cycle because of the variable type pump.

67ls1CamaroProject,

I hope you are right since the new design would be superior. Last I heard from you it didn't work. Let us know when it is blowing cold air and what the problem was.

Find me a replacement LS1 compressor and I will get it working. I think I hosed mine by not adding any oil to it and initially running it low on charge.

67ls1Camaro,

I have the compressor that came off my 99 F-body motor that now lives in my 66 Corvette. The motor has less than 5K miles on it, I bought it in 2000. I used a Sanden compressor in my Vette. Is your motor from an F-body?

Nick,

Yes mine is an F-Body. But, I just purchased one from Phoenix, AZ from Car-part.com. 9000 mile 2002 for $125. Thanks anyway. I should have checked this thread first.
