Alas, the HD in-car track video is up. Poor vette's didn't have a chance.

Nice video, Thanks.

Have you made any changes to FRC & roll resistance or do they remain where they were in our previous discussion?

Same. I bumped up the dampening on the shocks but that's it. That helped with the body motions quite a bit.

I was trying to check out the speedo on the road course. I saw 120 or so. How fast did you get up to?

So I went to the track (Little Tally) again on monday and busted my passenger outboard CV joint (a miata cv). I did (as always) a complete check over of the car before heading to the track so I know everything was good before getting to the track. When I was leaving the pits to do my third 20min session, I heard clicking so I turned around and pitted to investigate. I saw that the CV boot was busted and grease was everywhere so it was pretty easy to conclude the cause of the clicking. I packed up and decided to drive on it home (100 miles...) since I didn't have a way to tow it and have to replace the joint/axle anyways. Despite clunking and howling, it did make it home.

I do not know the root cause of the failure, it could be that the boot busted and the joint dried up or it could be that the cage or bearings couldn't handle the abuse. I will take it apart and try to determine the failure mode. Dan at Racing Concepts is willing to help me out to get it replaced. More to come....

Yah know...............read this earlier, just after you posted & have been thinking about it. Am slightly shocked that this could even happen (unless faulty connection or part). If it were torque related, would anticipate the half shaft going before the CV joint. What size it the half shaft & can you tell if it has been twisted (fatigued) @ all? What tires are you using? Your study of the damage will be very interesting.

So are you just using the Miata axles with ford inner joints? I am putting off doing the rear end till the last minute. I keep trying to figure out what i want to go with back there.

I did have problems with the inboard (ford) CV boots before. They kept busting at high speed. After talking to the manufacture (Rockford), I put less grease in the cup and put zip ties in every other "valley" of the folds. This fixed that issue.

The new problem is that the outboard (miata) CV joint itself is toast. It could be due to a busted boot that then led to overheating and failure of the joint but I won't have time to take it apart for a while with school about to start back up. It is a stock miata CV that has been modified to accept the bigger shaft. I don't know how it was modified or any of that, I am trying to figure all that stuff out.

Its ford inboard CV and miata outboard ones with a custom shaft. I would think the miata cv is the weakest link in the axle. The shaft does not show any signs of distortion.

LS1-450, what is your rear end setup?

Mine's Ford 8.8 from the pumpkin to the hub (both CV joints). Your hub splines will need to be modified to go this route.

I got some Traqmate GPS data from my last outing at Little Tally. I posted some graphs and numbers on the bottom of my specs page: http://home.comcast.net/~npartist/the_specs_page.html

Basically 1.2g's steady state cornering on 225/45/15 Toyo RA-1's on a mid-40's degree day.

New short video: http://videos.streetfire.net/video/N...ing_634760.htm

I did get the CV issue fixed, it appear the root cause was the boot busting which then dried out and destroyed the CV joint itself. So it does not appear the miata cv failed due to too much torque.

There is a lot of wind/rattle noise from the camera unfortunately.
